As the season approaches its zenith, OpenLab at HEART Ibiza continues to amaze its mounting aficionados. After weeks of jaw-dropping talent, Thursday, July 28, saw yet more underground idols and visual artists turn the nightclub event into a full-immersion electronic music and visual art experience.

Walking into HEART Ibiza is always remarkable, with its floor-to-ceiling screens and state-of-the-art technology. Make it a Thursday when OpenLab takes over the avant-garde space, and you are in for a real treat. Spectacular visual art cherry-picked by Robert Miles himself among thousands of submissions from across the globe, a couple hundred of these are projected at every event, representing the finest up-and-coming artists worldwide. This past Thursday Peter Gric painted live on stage while his creation came to life on the club’s screen walls. With half a million followers across social media, the Czech artist uses computer graphics to paint in virtual reality. The result is out of this world.

While works of art enveloped the quickly growing crowd in a visual dreamland, the underground class act Ninze & Okaxy filled the aural dimension with a hypnotic set. Captivating and musically rich, the German duo’s ‘ethnotronic ketapop’ and surrounding art transported the crowd into a whole other sphere. Extremely underground, their remarkable talent goes to show OpenLab’s skill in identifying and endowing artists because of their actual bravura rather than the sway of their name. As dancers in sparkly body suits and spiky headpieces took to the stage, the lushness and sophistication of the music and visuals built the night into a postmodern representation of itself, one in which the future comes into being.

Picking up where the German duo left off, Italian superstar Alex Neri turned it up a notch or two. Wowing clubs worldwide from the days of Kamasutra and his Planet Funk alias, the Tenax Recordings boss has showcased the likes of Ilario Alicante and Federico Grazzini, demonstrating his skill in selecting musical talent as well as music for his sets. With a strong passion for the console, Alex brought on a rhythmic, pulsing tech-house journey that got the crowd going for the duration of his upbeat high-energy set. Grabbing from the inside, Alex’s profound capacity to capture crowds had HEART Ibiza pulsing with the beat while futuristic robotic dancers brought the present into the future.

Always a star, the much beloved Robert Miles completed the night with a progressive turn into underground electronic realms. The OpenLab creator had the crowd in musical bliss, as he has been doing every week since the beginning of June. Devoted followers recognise both his talent and his contribution to the underground musical scene on the island and indeed the planet. With a full dancefloor until the very end, the crowd wanted more but left in a round of applause and mad respect as the night came to a close. For the true lover or those simply curious of quality underground electronic music and contemporary art, OpenLab at HEART Ibiza gives life to the sophisticated yet simple concept that has captured the imagination of millions across the globe. Working to keep alive the original alternative spirit of Ibiza, Robert Miles and the OpenLab team continues to bring incredible talent to the White Isle, defying the direction of the mainstream parties around the island and thus indulging the eyes and ears of anyone who enters.
