We’re en-route to a traditional finca on the San Jose road but it’s not any ordinary finca, it has been transformed across a couple of decades into one of the most spectacular island experiences. We are, of course, on our way to the closing party of KM5. It may have started life as an ordinary finca but there is nothing ordinary about it now. From the minute we enter we are presented with a multitude of experiences; from the ridiculously good restaurant, the beautiful boutique and the spectacular sushi bar, to the gorgeous garden.

It boasts a truly cosmopolitan crowd, from all over the world, keen to enjoy its multi-level offering, making it one of the island’s most popular destinations all summer round but there is something very special about its season opening and closing fiestas. The latter is not just for the tourists that are still on-island, but it offers a chance for islanders to come together and share stories at the end of another action-packed summer. The first thing that caught the eye on making our way into the garden is the go-go dancers in the giant cocktail glasses. There is a real carnival atmosphere for the season closing.

The garden is the focal point as KM5 reaches capacity early. All of the tables in the restaurant have been booked weeks in advance, the final evening of the season always offers a vibrant atmosphere in which to enjoy a magnificent feast as the final gathering unfolds. There are several spots in the garden in which to relax, the couches in the corner of the chill area are popular, where conversation flowed but the main garden is where all the action is happening. Performers on stilts make their way carefully through the crowd, dancers in sexy costumes add a burlesque element and there are a selection of island DJs – Xavier Arak, Donaes B2B Johannes, Sergi Ribas and Nima Gorji – delivering a cool soundtrack.

When we head into the wee small hours, the lounge offers an indoor option, where Tania Vulcano and Iban Mendoza hold court in the booth, offering a cutting-edge musical journey that ensures that no one goes home early. KM5, traditionally, carries on through to the early morning and the 2017 finale was showing signs of more of the same. The atmosphere continued to climb as the evening unfolded and the morning after the night before became the morning before the night ahead! It was a fitting end to yet another fantastic summer for KM5.
