For the educated electronica connoisseur – or anyone, actually, who has an appreciation for deep, immersive house beats with a tech edge – the news that German selector and producer Dixon would be bringing his debut White Isle residency to Pacha Ibiza was, quite literally, music to their ears! Teasing us with the promise of a musical experience of ‘transcendence through music and movement, through cyber-enthusiasm, spiritual toys, and random marvels’, even amongst the whirlwind of the International Music Summit Ibiza 2019 and other island openings, this was one inauguration we were hell-bent on attending.

For opening night, the Innervisions CEO was fittingly joined by his label peers and A Critical Mass collaborators Âme. As we were looking for parking nearby the iconic home of the twin cherries, we noticed a cluster of keen clubbers already gathered around the entrance that wouldn’t diminish all night. When we finally made our way into the multi-level main room, deep beats were already rolling over the heads of the revering crowd who were intently focussed on the DJ booth at the heart of the room.

Âme was billed to cut the ribbon on the Transmoderna opening and set the scene for Dixon, with Kristian Beyer flying solo for the occasion. With the concept championing a forward-thinking and inclusive approach to clubbing, when we arrived the two DJs were effortlessly sharing the booth, enjoying a cheeky b2b sessions before Dixon took over the reigns. With a laser-emitting satellite and what looked like an asteroid of molten silver suspended from the ceiling, the lighting kept hazy and low except for the shards of neon pink, purple or pure white illuminating the room, we felt like we were floating through outer space.

Actually, the clever use of lighting at Transmoderna deserves a paragraph dedicated to it alone, as it plays a key role in the overall feel and cohesiveness of the night. Citing Kerri Chandler’s truism “a basement, a red light, and a feeling“ as an influence, Pacha Ibiza had revealed that Dixon was working withvisual artists, interior designers, light and laser engineers, and ‘generally fun ground-breakers from differentdisciplines’ to create an immersive environment for his night at the twin cherries. And while the ever-changing smorgasbord of rainbow hues, minimal lasers in red and blue, fine geometric patterns in pastel shades or fuzzy, angular beams in pure white never overshadowed the music, it was impossible to miss how they morphed and pulsated in sync with each musical shift.

The man himself was, as expected, not holding back for the opening of his debut Ibiza residency. Over the course of two delicious hours, Dixon rolled out heavy basslines that shook our heart to the core overlaid with dark, distorted sound shards, before switching to exotic vocals and thick drum beats that were impossible to resist. At times, the turntable maestro went quite minimal, at others dreamy and ethereal, but never depriving us of a galloping bass for too long. His reign in the booth was eclectic – don’t even try to Shazam – intense and immersive, pulling us in ever deeper.

In the early hours of the morning Âme’s Kristian Beyer rejoined Dixon in the booth to drive home the night with an energetic b2b, the dancefloor still giving it large. Dropping the stark and futuristic beats like a hail storm, they demanded every last morsel of energy – and we happily obliged. Transmoderna is a concept different to anything we have seen at Pacha Ibiza before, and it is one we can’t wait to see how it develops over the summer. But with the next edition seeing fellow Pacha resident Solomun joining Dixon, we are confident we have a big hitter on our hands.
