For many years, San Antonio has been unfairly reduced to a reputation that was built on the wild tourist antics the harbour town’s ‘West End’ has become infamous for. In reality, this raucous area covers only one long strip and a few side streets within the resort, yet it is tarnishing an important local area that has got a lot to offer to those who know where to go.

In the last two or three years especially, there have been some exciting and stylish new additions to San Antonio’s culinary landscape, with a blossoming wellness scene emerging. One of the best places to enjoy the White Isle’s spectacular sunsets from, some of the island’s most iconic brands are also located in the district – think Café del Mar and Café Mambo to name just a few – with more and more new venues popping up like mushrooms. There has never been a better time to shake off your preconceptions and explore, and here we share some our favourite new and classic destinations in the San Antonio area.

Where To Stay…

One of our all-time favourite venues, the authentic sprawling finca built by White Isle legend Tony Pikes combines quirky charm with rock’n’roll history and all the modern comforts of a premium boutique hotel. Many icons of the music, fashion and acting world have walked its hallowed halls and the venue remains home to some of the best parties on the island. Since Ibiza Rocks took over the property a few years ago, it has been given a little facelift with a distinctive Alice in Wonderland vibe, but its mischievous spirit remains. Meanwhile, a healthy juice menu, spa and foodie events such as the incredible Sunday Roast and Hawksmoor’s Richard Turner’s Meatopia pop-up add a new element to the Pikes experience, putting it firmly on the culinary map of the island.

Part of the renowned Melia Group, Sol House is breathing new life into a part of San Antonio that was previously dominated by budget accommodation. Sleek and chic with colourful and artsy accents, the vibrant property – a collaboration with Ibiza Rocks – values good music and hosts regular pool parties as well as some of the island’s best sunset sessions on its stylish rooftop terrace. With an infinity pool overlooking the glittering bay and a cocktail bar to keep you refreshed, guests can listen to live sets by edgy new talent such as London-based musician Youngr and international DJ icons including Jose Padilla.

Boasting beautiful views over San Antonio’s marina and a delicious menu full of mouthwatering and modern Mediterranean fare, Villa Mercedes is an institution to both locals and visitors to the White Isle alike. In the daytime, the converted villa, originally built in 1901, is a great place to enjoy a light lunch and refreshing drinks while watching out onto the glittering sea. In the evenings, the garden transforms into a magical oasis perfect for a romantic dinner, with live music and cabaret performances making it a night to remember. Simply step off your boat after watching the sunset at sea, and enjoy fine food and wines, expertly mixed cocktails and welcoming service in enchanting surroundings.

SaCapella_IconIbiza_002Sa Capella

One of the most elegant and romantic restaurants on the island, Sa Capella is housed in an ancient 18th century building that was originally intended as a place of worship, dazzling with exposed stone walls, high vaulted ceilings and a beautiful courtyard. The food is just as outstanding as the atmosphere, offering classic Mediterranean and Ibizan delicacies executed with modern flair. It’s a sophisticated yet authentic eatery on the outskirts of San Antonio, and one that is beloved by locals and visitors in the know alike.

Where To Watch The Sunset…

Cafe del Mar Closing by Andrei OprescuThe Sunset Strip

With close, unspoilt views on the natural spectacle, a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of dining and drinking options, the seaside promenade remains one of the most popular spots to watch the sunset from. It is also home to some of the most iconic names on the island, including the legendary Café del Mar and Café Mambo, as well as some newer additions like Mint Lounge, Savannah and Fresh. Café Del Mar has been giving guests the perfect sunset experience for over three decades and, with the addition of a new tiered terrace a few years ago, is as appealing as it has ever been. Delicious cocktails, good food and world-class DJ talent behind the decks provide an unforgettable setting to watch the sun go down in the birthplace of the famed Ibiza chill out genre. Meanwhile, Café Mambo offers a varied menu of tasty food and drink to be enjoyed just a stone’s throw from the glittering sea, as well as some of the island’s most renowned pre-parties that allow guests to see superstar spinners at work for free (more about this in the ‘party’ section).

A little off the beaten path in Cap Negret, this boutique hotel, restaurant and bar wows with completely unspoilt sunset views away from the crowds. Island-favourite and internationally renowned DJs provide a laid-back and eclectic soundtrack to the natural spectacle, while the tasty food and drinks finish off the experience in style. Individual tables dotted around the surrounding rocks provide an intimate setting for a special occasion, or you can take over a corner on the sprawling terrace with your crew.

Located at the far end of San Antonio Bay, Kumharas draws in locals and visitors to the island alike with its bohemian vibe, delicious food, stunning sea views and mini hippy market. When sun has set over the vast expanse of the Mediterranean, vibrant live performances and infectious DJ sets get the party started and keep guests dancing long into the night.

Kasbah Sunset Food ReviewKasbah

Just a short stroll from the Sunset Strip, Kasbah offers a more laid-back experience in beautiful surroundings, with an emphasis on delicious food and craft cocktails. The eatery is open from breakfast through to dinner, but it truly comes to life during magic hour, bathed in the golden glow of the sun. Its pole position right by the waterside offers prime views on the fiery ball sinking into the sea; the perfect place to relax and kick back with friends or enjoy a romantic moment.

Where To Party…

OceanBeachIbiza_partyOcean Beach Ibiza

One of the first glamorous beach club concepts on the island, Ocean Beach Ibiza is still a leader where daytime parties are concerned. Huge day beds, spectacular shows and a roster of fantastic party concepts – including Hed Kandi, Ministry of Sound VIP, Sin Sundays and Soul Heaven – never fail to pull in a trendy crowd, while the varied menu of utterly delicious food – we highly recommend the signature steak – is worth a visit in its own right!

CraigDavid_TS5_PoolParty_IbizRocks_2017Ibiza Rocks

The home of live music on the White Isle, Ibiza Rocks seems to get bigger and better every year with more and more creative concepts being added to their traditional gig offering each season. 2017 is set to be the year of the pool party, with Craig David returning with his sell-out TS5 residency and the world’s craziest dance music concept, Elrow, taking to the waters on two exclusive dates. You can soak up he sound from the comfort of the VIP area, but it’s way more fun to get involved and splash around in the pool to the beats.

Cafe'_Mambo_Fat_Boy_Slim_Essentialibiza_2016_by_Tamara_Sini 011Café Mambo

Prominently situated on the Sunset Strip, Café Mambo’s pre-parties are the stuff of legends and consistently cause a roadblock on the famous seaside promenade. Watch the fiery red ball sink into the waves over a delicious meal and then stick around to see some of the biggest names in dance music take to the decks for a free set. Tables in the VIP area bring you not only into close proximity to your turntable heroes, but also guarantee you space to dance.

Rio Restaurant Dinner ReviewRio Ibiza

A shiny new gem in the crown of San Antonio’s harbour promenade, the stylish venue combines excellent food, great music and amazing views across three levels. The club on the first floor boasts not only floor-to-ceiling windows that give the party an impressive backdrop of the beautiful marina, but also one of the coolest light installations we have ever seen, a high-tech construction conceived by the engineers behind the iconic productions at the now defunct Space. The sleek roof terrace with its panoramic vistas is the perfect place to cool down after a turn on the dance floor, and with all areas available for private hire, it’s a great option for exclusive parties, hen and stag celebrations or birthdays.

Under new ownership and following a top-to-bottom transformation, the 2017 season is set to be a big one for the famous San Antonio club having secured a partnership with the iconic Defected Records, whose Defected In The House party takes over Sunday night. After spending some time focusing on their presence in Croatia, the much loved house music label is returning to the White Isle this summer and is making Eden its home. Boss Simon Dunmore says, “Eden is a sleeping giant with a rich Balearic heritage and San Antonio has enormous potential as the gateway for many first time clubbers visiting the island. Being right in the heart of a vibrant, informed and passionate crowd makes Eden as exciting a proposition as anywhere on this island. The line-ups will be equally as adventurous, balancing established names and future talent. All the artists involved share our vision, and we’re really excited about launching in May.” Eden has also just announced a cutting-edge underground party on Thursdays nights, when Faction and Magna Carta join forces to bring their signature sound to the newly refurbished venue. Respected cutting edge party Audio Rehab will take on Wednesday night duties and big room party specialists Pukka Up will reside on Saturday night for what promises to be a massive summer.
