Sitting Down With Superstar DJ And Producer Jonas Blue

From cereal box to superstar DJ, Jonas Blue’s rise to worldwide fame is a story worth telling. With a handful of seasons under his belt – including his own residency last year – the Essex born producer and selector has filled both Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza on more than one occasion, having been invited by dance music supremo’s David Guetta and Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike to perform at their capacity-packing residencies.

His chart-smashing productions have brought a different kind of euphoria to these two island superclubs. With a vocal focus and pumping dance music beat, Jonas Blue’s time in the studio has given the best times to thousands who come to the White Isle to hear him play – and that’s all thanks to his musical background and breakfast choice as a child.

“I started as a musician first and foremost when I was about seven or eight-years-old,” Jonas Blue told Essential Ibiza in his backstage dressing room at Hï Ibiza for David Guetta’s wicked FMIF residency. “By the time I was eleven, I got into production. That was purely on the basis of being a DJ and wanting to create music to play. I ended up getting into it through a software CD that I got in a cereal box! I’ve been doing it every day since.”

But despite filling stadiums and conquering charts, Jonas Blue is still considered – in terms of time at the top – a newcomer on the scene. It was his uplifiting rework of Tracy Chapman’s iconic Fast Car single that took his career into seventh gear, which reached platinum status across the world, hitting number two in the U.K. and topping the lot in Australia.

“It was a crazy one,” he said, speaking about the sudden popularity take-off. “I’ve been playing music for a really long time. There was a moment back in 2015 when I came out here and was inspired musically with what was going on. We had people like Avicii, Swedish House Mafia and it was all that kind of sound when I came. I then went back and created the Fast Car remix. At first, it was just going to be a tune I add into my DJ sets, little did I know it would become the tune that sent my career into overdrive.”

And what a career it’s been so far for the 30-year-old. His unique production style combined with DJ sets filled with his own creations has seen him grow a fanbase from all corners of the globe. His ear for a catchy dance beat and sing-a-long vocal that perfectly fits has turned the Essex producer into one of most sought after performers on the planet. With a Jonas Blue set, you know exactly what you’re going to get: euphoria.

“There’s no better feeling than seeing thousands of people sing your song back,” he said. “With my music, it’s all about the songs and the dance backing track underneath it. I don’t think I’d be able to make the music I do without DJing every week and seeing different kinds of music played live, across loads of different genres. Being in the studio or being out there with all the people that support me. It’s special. I love it all.”

But of course, Ibiza holds a special place in his heart and he is a DJ that understands this island just as much as the millions of club revellers that keep the White Isle as summer’s dance music capital. Once you play anywhere on Ibiza, you leave a part of yourself on the island.

“For me, it was always the holy grail,” he said. “If you get to play here you’ve made it. It’s my fourth year in now and it just gets better each and every summer. As soon as you step off the plane and smell the air, you just know it’s going to be absolute madness. I’m very privileged to be able to play my music here.”

Jonas Blue has finished here on the island for this season, but his latest summer hit release Younger is still doing the rounds. Keep tabs on Essential Ibiza’s party calendar for all the latest for next year’s club nights, as and when they come in. For links, see below.
