Ibiza may be dominated by electronic music most of the time, but the rock ’n’ roll spirit was very much alive and kicking on the White Isle when Las Dalias Ibiza paid homage to the iconic Woodstock Festival in its 50th anniversary year with a day-to-night celebration in the grounds of the famous hippie market. With the sun shining and a line-up of fantastic live acts and DJs awaiting, music lovers were streaming in from all corners of the island.

With 17 local artists billed to play over the course of 12 hours, the mini festival began at midday and lasted, in true Ibiza style, until way after night had fallen. With a fraction of the market’s colourful artisanal stalls set up as usual, and a selection of street food trucks offering refreshing beverages and tasty treats, there was plenty to see and do aside from a fantastic musical offering. It was also a chance to check out the newly renovated Las Dalias bar, which had been transformed with a hip new look in time for the new season.

Furthermore, in the ancient and hallowed halls of the original building, captivating video footage and images from the original Woodstock festival had been set-up in an impressive display. Baron Wolman, photographer extraordinaire and Rolling Stone magazine’s first chief lenser, had kindly lend his photographic documentary of the legendary music event to the organisers, and throughout the day revellers were drifting in and out to marvel at the reportage-style photographs.[/caption]

On the aptly named Love Stage, a smorgasbord of sounds awaited. With a selection of DJs creating a ‘Woodstock Vibe’ from early on in the day, a crowd had gathered on and around the open-air dancefloor in no time. From infectious drums to melodic and soulful performances, live shows by My Generation and Brand New Hippies had everyone up on their feet and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Needing little introduction, Hot Ice Collective, one of Ibiza’s most popular and prolific bands, treated us to an extended monster set that lasted several hours. Paying tribute to greats of the Flower Power era including Janis Joplin, Santana, Joe Cocker and Jimi Hendrix, frontman Paul Powell and his crew effortlessly captivated their audience and created an atmosphere of love, unity and joy even the original flower children would have been proud of.

Regaling the crowd with iconic evergreens such as A Little Help From My Friends by The Beatles – and more unexpected treats like Shout by Depeche Mode – wherever we looked, there were people hugging, dancing or just very enthusiastically singing along. The world’s most legendary musical event may have taken place 50 years ago, but its spirit is immortal and Las Dalias did a great job in reincarnating it!
