With the rain pouring, Ushuaïa Ibiza and the Cocoon faithful rocked-up in their waterproofs and dancing shoes and gave it all they have for Kraftwerk’s first-ever Ibiza performance. Nothing was stopping this one and as the clouds finally parted, the electronic music innovators entered the moonlit stage. With our glasses at the ready, Kraftwerk was ready to take Ushuaïa Ibiza on a journey into a thunderous third dimension. Here’s what happened.

Special guest Seth Troxler opened proceedings shortly before the heavens broke on the Playa d’en Bossa open-air venue. It didn’t matter, though. Thousands braved the conditions to celebrate Cocoon’s 20 years on the island. His groovy yet techy-wobbly selection style is the perfect fit for Cocoon’s iconic techno heritage. For an opening set, he kept things tight and funky, mixing vinyl effortlessly with that touch of flair he’s known for. After Seth, it was time to Sven.

The Papa took the worst of the weather. Did he care? Absolutely not. With a few making their way for some shelter, Sven Väth made sure his set was just as electric as the sky above for us in the thick of it. He opted for a set typical to Cocoon and – like Troxler – polished off the vinyl with ease. This was Sven moving up the gears, tune after tune, using his decades of experience to gradually ramp-up the energy and keep the Cocooners hot and ready for Kraftwerk in the refreshingly chilled weather. With his set finished, the sky blackened and the stage silenced. The robots had arrived.

Kraftwerk is without doubt one of electronic music’s founding fathers. Formed in the 70s out of Düsseldorf’s bustling krautrock scene, the German foursome took to synthesizers and drum machines to experiment a new kind of space-age sound, that’s formed the basis for techno we listen to today. A diverse crowd with the utmost respect for these musical geniuses came out en masse to witness a live performance with a production level just as futuristic as Kraftwerk itself.

It was a real journey. With eye-popping visuals made possible by the Kraftwerk labelled 3D glasses handed on entrance. The music, though, took the experience into an uncharted dimension, going through all the band’s greatest hits from famous albums such as Autobahn, The Man Machine, Computer World and Trans-Europe express. This was a unique Ibiza show; one we may not see again for a long time. Luckily, there’s still some Cocoon closing goodness to come, with the German super-brand waving goodbye to its 20th summer on the island at Amnesia on Monday, 30th September, where Papa Sven will be joined by techno-house-disco trailblazer Peggy Gou, with Adam Beyer, Ilario Alicante and ANNA holding down the Club Room.
