Carl Cox is an Ibiza icon who has etched himself into island history books and been a part of decades of clubbing memories and moments for countless generations. Despite this, he’s yet to play at one of the White Isle’s most popular clubs: Ushuaïa. Thanks to Nic Fanciulli and his DANCE OR DIE takeover, the big man was back in Playa d’en Bossa, but this time under the red writing of this immense open-air venue. Essential Ibiza joined the thousands en masse to witness this much anticipated season opener.

To the surprise of many, Carl Cox was on a little earlier than expected, with his good mate Nic Fanciulli taking over the sunset reigns. This was perfect. The sun was blazing as the atmosphere kindled, all whilst the big man readied himself on the famous outdoor stage to set the place alight. He brought all his bangers – and then some. Relief releases, Intec productions and classic Ibiza anthems filled this high-energy and high-spirited set. After an embrace from Dance Or Die frontman Nic Fanciulli, Carl was ready to hand-over the decks and take a deserved sit-down – or shot of hierbas? Only Coxy knows.

With the sun set, the speakers were still hitting 200-degrees when Fanciulli took over for 90 more minutes of devasting DANCE OR DIE goodness. The Saved Records boss started perfectly as he mixed in Late Night Tuff Guy’s remix of Roland Clark and DJ Le Roi’s renowned I Get Deep cut-up with that Silverstone If I Had A Choice sample that’s been doing the rounds this season at Music On. Nic was ready to show what DANCE OR DIE was all about. The beats were sharp and deadly and Kerri Chandler’s Atmosphere had the place reaching-out for an oxygen mask. Breathless. Fanciulli was unrelenting in his first ever DANCE OR DIE set; as if there was any doubt.

After two tour-de-force performances, the two techno titans joined together for a curtain closing back-to-back. This was the final stage and the pair worked in tandem as they cycled through gold medal winning house and techno selections. Think KiNK’s remix of Dusky’s Perth, Deetron’s T-Symmetry and, of course, Strings Of Life, which closed this mega Wednesday evening at Ushuaïa. Thankfully there are 10 more to go until it closes its doors to a debut season on September 25^th.
