Calvin Harris is back at Pacha Ibiza – and it seemed the whole of the island knew about it. It’s always a roadblock when this dance music megastar comes to town and this night was no exception. With a line-up featuring Generik, Martin Solveig and of course Harris himself, Pacha Ibiza was pulsing with energy, which you could feel all the way from Dalt Villa, even before the first track was played. This was going to be a memorable residency opener. Here’s what happened.

Pacha Ibiza’s entrance was a ghost town. Its outside terrace: dead. Its rooftop smoking area: not a single cigarette in sight. It was just a minute short of 2am; Calvin Harris was just about to enter the booth. No one in the club was going to miss a single second of his two-hour set – and neither were we. The outside emptiness was explained as we made it through the sea of Harris fans. Pacha Ibiza was bursting with a real liveliness and enthusiasm. It was time to see if Calvin Harris could take it to the next level.

The Grammy award-winning producer holds the same level of recognition for his DJing ability. Keeping his set fast-paced with sharp transitions and certified bangers only, Harris was turning-up the heat, beat-by-beat. Similar to other performances, the Scottish selector understands that people are hear to listen to his own productions, but his skill as a DJ extends much further than that. He has a unique ability to express his underground knowledge, while still including his own songs, but without compromising the flow of his set. This skill is something that has put Calvin Harris at the very top of the game.

Showcasing a mix of EDM, house, techno and all kinds of clubland bangers, with tunes from Alan Fitzpatrick, Transcode, Mar-T, Alesso, Eli Brown, The Chemical Brothers and Todd Terry, you can see just how diverse this two-hour Pacha Ibiza set was. It was a musical exhibition that paired productions from very different genres in such a clever way. Calvin Harris used all his tools brilliantly, with many different materials to create what could only be described as the perfect set for this peak season Pacha Ibiza crowd. This was only the start. With four more dates to go, who knows how much better Calvin Harris can get under the twinned cherries? There’s only one way to find out.
