One of the champions of integrating live music elements and an eclectic mix of samples into hypnotic, otherworldly electronica, Satori is one of the leading lights of a new sound. And after a steady rise in popularity on the White Isle’s discerning music scene, this year he has made the forward-thinking HEART Ibiza the base for his first island residency, Satori Presents Maktub. Having gained rave reviews during the early weeks of its summer run, we felt it was time to return for a second helping!

We couldn’t have chosen a better night as Satori was joined by no other than Acid Pauli, one of the originators of Ibiza’s alternative electronic music scene and founder of Acid Sundays, the first event Satori himself played on Ibiza! Speaking to us a few weeks back about the concept for his night, he told us, “ I had the idea to do a night where we would just bring in live performers and bands. For me, this is where the future of clubbing lies and we wanted to bring back the art of performance. I only play live myself, so it made sense.”

Stepping into the universe he has created at HEART Ibiza, a venue well known for fusing art and music, we were greeted by a host of eccentric characterised playfully bantering with the clubbers who passed them, and amongst each other. With Satori in the booth, the dancefloor was already fit to burst as revellers swayed to his hypnotising sounds. Dancers in ethereal white dresses were showing off their moves as he played to us on his –by now iconic – flute. For an extra special treat Kurdish musician Bahramji, who is well known on the island for his poetic Santur and Setar performances, joined the talented producer on stage and transported us to far-flung foreign lands with his exotic vocals.

As we joined the pulsating crowds at the heart of the action, we couldn’t help but get hypnotised by the fantastical and mesmerising graphics coming to life on walls via powerful projections. Watching the geometrical patterns and colours morph, twist and turn, we felt like the floor was spinning like a planet in the solar system. We were lucky enough to be introduced to the man behind the magic, Satori’s visual artist Vincent Lauenstein of Wolf and Bird, who told us, “The Visuals of the Maktub nights at HEART Ibiza are a key ingredient in the sensory immersive experience of the show. They are mixed live alongside the live sets of Satori, with the intention of creating a synchronized dance of visuals and music that opens a new experience space for the audience.Taking the audience on a journey, they combine elements like musical symbols with imagery of live performance like dance or theatre. An example of this are clips of the actors and performers present throughout the night in the club, bridging reality and representation into a unique mix for the audience.”

In the early hours of the morning, eventually Acid Pauli took over the proverbial reins from Satori to play until the very end of the night. He treated us to a bass-heavy yet uplifting, dreamy and deep set that steadily pushed on with a life-affirming energy that had us dancing until the very last beat had been dropped.
