Since arriving on the White Isle four years ago, Satori has steadily made his mark on Ibiza and its music scene thanks to his mesmerising live performances and unique sound. Gathering an ever-growing following of electronica lovers who crave a different musical experience, this summer Satori fans were thrilled to discover that the talented producer has teamed up with forward-thinking venue HEART Ibiza for his debut island residency: Maktub.

Every Thursday, Satori invites electronica lovers into his sonic universe where music is fused with visual art to produce an extraordinary experience. We managed to catch a few minutes with the performer and musical mastermind ahead of the Satori Presents Maktub at HEART Ibiza opening night and took the hiking enthusiast on a walk along Ibiza’s rugged coastline to chat about all things club culture, his production process, his love for the White Isle and yoga…

You surprised us by already knowing this hidden away place! How much time do you spend on the island that you know it so well?
This summer I am staying in Ibiza for five months because of my residency at HEART Ibiza, so I’m using the island as my base camp to fly from here to other shows or to visit friends and family. I love to hike and I love to go to ‘secret’ places like this, or to discover new hidden coves and beaches.

How long have you been coming to Ibiza?
I’d actually never been before I started doing shows here. This is now my fourth season, but the first show I played on the island was Acid Sundays by Acid Pauli in 2016, so he was the one who brought me to Ibiza for the first time. I immediately fell in love with this place. I had an idea about it in my mind, but it is just such a special place.

What do you love most about the island?
There are two things. As a performer, what I love most is that Ibiza is maybe the only place in the world where your crowd can have a movie star, a billionaire, a person who doesn’t have a space to sleep, a model and a raver who hasn’t slept for four days dance next to each other. This island has got such an incredible diversity of people who come here for the music – do you know any other place like this? And for myself, personally, I love that Ibiza can be exactly what you want it to be. You can do yoga or you can go raving for a whole week and dance your socks off. There is so much variety and that’s what I love about it.

This is the first summer that you have your own residency on the island. Tell us more…
I was actually approached to do this residency two years ago, but I didn’t want to do it because I couldn’t find an original concept. I didn’t just want to start any old residency unless it was bringing something new to the island. And then I had the idea to do a night where we would just bring in live performers and bands. For me, this is where the future of clubbing lies and we wanted to bring back the art of performance. I only play live myself, so it made sense.

You are well known for incorporating instruments into your shows. How many different ones do you play?
Well… I play a lot, but only a little bit! I play the flute, the African kora, the piano, the guitar… the guitar was actually the first instrument I learned when I was around 12. Let’s say I play each on a level that enables me to communicate with real musicians. For me, it’s important from a composer’s perspective to be able to express myself to instrumentalists.

Where do you find the inspiration for the other sound samples you use?
I like to see my music as a kind of moodboard of things that I discover during my travels, or during a conversation or even watching a movie. As a result, my songs are a reflection of who and where I am at that moment and that makes it super personal. So when I start a set with a sample I got from a movie, it literally takes us right back to the moment when I was watching it. But that is the beauty of sampling and recording, that you plant something from your life in your music. But then the challenge is to harmonise everything, because you don’t want to have a violent cocktail of sounds. That’s where the composer element kicks in, and that’s the part that I feel most passionate about. It’s the most challenging, stressful part of producing, but it’s also the most fun!

We heard that you love doing yoga to prepare for your shows. Does it help with your busy schedule and irregular hours?
A few weeks ago I had to spend a night in the Moscow airport because there was a problem with my visa and I literally had to sleep on the ground. By the time I arrived at the venue, I had been awake for 38 hours. I was so exhausted I almost couldn’t stand upright – and I was supposed to play live with the band for two hours followed by a three-hour live set. This could be exactly the point where someone might start to take drugs to keep going, but I asked everybody to leave backstage and I did yoga for 20 minutes. I did some breathing exercises that are designed to help get the blood pumping around the body – and afterwards I felt like a newborn and ended up playing for seven hours. I can get a lot of energy out of yoga and it makes me feel very powerful.

How long have you been practising yoga?
I don’t do traditional yoga, I practise something called movement which my personal trainer and friend taught me. These exercises are based on yoga and capoeira and I have been doing them for two years now. They give so much energy; it’s unbelievable.
