Considered by many as the trailblazer of immersive clubbing experiences, SuperMartXé is a well-established Ibiza institution. Not resting on its laurels, this summer the iconic party brand is going above and beyond the bar it has set previously with an impressive roster of artists and an even bigger, bolder and brighter production to blow your mind! Our intrigue sparked, we went along to the season opener last Friday and were transported to a futuristic cyberpunk version of Japan, sound-tracked by the inimitable 2manydjs.

Being both SuperMartXé AND Privilege Ibiza virgins, my friends and I had no idea what to expect. However, the theme of the night, “Cyber Geisha” certainly fired up our imagination as we tried to guess what scenes would unfold within the world largest superclub. Well, we couldn’t have predicted what awaited us!

Making our way into the cavernous main room, we were dazzled by what seemed to be thousands of red and gold lanterns swaying from the ceiling, with colourful neon signs that evoked an exotic back street vibe adorning the walls. A huge Shinto shrine had been erected on the main stage, in front of which SuperMartXé’s fierce dancers were strutting their stuff. Resident DJ Juanjo Martin was doing an excellent job of warming up the crowd, which was gathered across the main room’s two-tiered dancefloor.

Vocalist Nalaya Brown had the honours of opening the first SuperMartXé show of 2019, and greeted clubbers with a powerful live rendition that could have lifted the roof off the club. Right on queue, a cast of fantastical cyberpunk creatures and caricatures of Japanese culture clichés such as camera-laden tourists were unleashed onto the huge space, some appearing from the ceiling to perform aerial acrobatics, others roaming the floors and galleries to entertain the revellers.

It was sheer madness, in the best possible way. Stilt walkers, red dragons, daring dancers and performers in incredibly intricate costumes were popping up at every twist and turn, while David Tort expertly mixed electronica remixes of iconic anthems with energetic tech house beats that send clubbers into a frenzy. Geisha’s in glittering kimonos were floating high up above our heads as a creature covered in 3D eyeballs play-fought with a man who had a UFO hovering above his head.

Singer Nalaya reappeared on stage for another impactful show, belting out hits such Music Is The Answer and Show Me Love that had the room singing along. Anticipation was building, and finally it was time for headliners 2manydjs to take to the booth. With the turntables set up at the heart of the two-level dancefloor, music lovers were able to see the duo from up close – a rare treat nowadays! The gentlemen didn’t waste a second and thundered into their set on a heavy, driving bassline that transformed into The Chemical Brothers’ Got To Keep On (Riton Remix). Teasing us with expertly layered builds and distorted beats, after an energetic start they veered into funkier territory and treated us to some leg-busting disco classics, cleverly mixing You Make Me Feel and even Ma Baker samples into their set.

A whirlwind of colours, performances and mind-blowing effects – while retaining a focus on quality music – our first SuperMartXé experience was most certainly a night to remember. And with the likes of Benny Benassi, Mark Knight, Fedde Le Grand, Robbie Rivera, David Penn, Superlover, Kryder and David Morales plus many more exciting artists still to come, it’s safe to say it won’t be our last!
