Toolroom Records has smashed its way to the very top of the game. It has innovated a standalone genre that has helped the London dance music label hit best-selling honours on Beatport in 2018. This season it’s back at Eden for a second stint after leaving the San Antonio venue five summers ago, following a dispute with the superclub’s previous owners. It’s been a much-anticipated return that label head Mark Knight has been waiting for. Essential Ibiza sat down with the London based DJ and producer during Toolroom’s massive opening party at Eden.

“There’s going to be no hanging around tonight. We’re going straight in for the kill,” the Toolroom boss said with conviction backstage as the party was moving up the gears just a few short steps away.

“I don’t think you really have to prepare. I mean, I’ve put more thought in it as it’s the opening night. We have a lot of people playing tonight with some short sets, but we’ve done that so people have to think about their sets a lot more. The preparation has been all year long really in terms of the opening party. I can’t wait now!”

Knight was buzzing with excitement and this was only heightened when we could hear Hannah Wants blowing the lid off the San Antonio club as we sat down and talked. He’s curated this night and he knows exactly what he wants for Toolroom.

“What we’re about is family. It’s about bringing people together that represent us as a brand,” he said.

“We feel that we have a community of people. Not only in terms of the DJs, but also with the fan base. It’s kind of a niche thing as we’ve always sat in an independent place where we’re not mainstream and we’re not strictly underground, but sometimes that can alienate us because people don’t know where to put us. We do have a very loyal and dedicated fanbase, though.

“We’re happy to be in our name and we want to bring people in to join us.”

Toolroom looks after its family and its summer line-ups stay true to its releases. First and foremost, it’s a record label, but through that it can give its artists a platform to showcase those best-selling productions to music lovers from all across the globe. Leftwing and Kody are one of those acts.

“Well the biggest record this season is Leftwing and Kody’s I Feel It. That will be very much this summer’s big anthem,” he said.

“We also have some new Weiss stuff dropping this week. I’ve got a new record coming out in August, so as a label, we always have the bullets.”

And Eden was ready for those bullets with a refreshed feeling and buzzing atmosphere. Its sound system is sharp, its revellers are hungry and Mark Knight believes the San Antonio club is ready for even more.

“I think it’s turned another corner,” he said.

“The island constantly evolves and we were one of the first to come here in 2014. I can honestly say it was the best summer I’ve had. It was amazing. It really felt like we were part of something that was growing.

“We had everyone come play for us, from Sasha to MK. It felt organic and it was growing and giving props to Defected they’ve kept it going, but we had to pull out because of Gatecrasher which is such a shame because we laid the foundation and had to step away from it, but we’re back now and we’re happy to be a part of it.

“This club represents us as a brand. The whole arrangement feels very cohesive and I think San Antonio will be on the map where it should be, there’s no reason why not.”

After all the talking, it was time for the music. We followed Mark down to the booth, where Hannah Wants was firing out heater after heater. With the dancefloor packed and ready, Knight entered the booth along with Leftwing and Kody who were ready to smash out their set. There were smiles all round and the place erupted when the pair dropped THAT tune. Mark Knight was definitely right about that one.

Now it was the bosses turn. After a slight technical mishap involving an apparent broken USB, the seasoned DJ and producer showed his salt and took Eden on an unrelenting, BPM packed journey. This set was an ode to Toolroom and bangers like You Can Do It Baby and Psychodrama showed us just why the London record label is so successful. Toolroom is back and it’s bigger, better, louder, heavier and more exciting than ever. Make it part of your Ibiza clubbing trip.
