Kehakuma Thursdays Are The New Saturdays!

Posted on September 17, 2011

It’s Thursday night in Playa D’en Bossa and we are en route to Kehakuma, the superclub’s deep, tribal party that has captured the imagination of thousands of discerning music lovers since its launch. This year has seen the party step up a gear, with more and more clubbers marking their diaries long before they leave their respective countries, ensuring that Kehakuma is part of their holiday plans. VIVa music boss Steve Lawler has been added to the line up for this year and tonight he makes the last of his four appearances at the party and we can’t wait to give him a proper send off.

By pure good fortune, mystic powers, a stroke of genius by the team programming events or the clubbing Gods smiling on us, Kehakuma and Cadenza are on the same night, meaning that we have just enjoyed a pre-party containing Sasha, Luciano and Cassy and we still have Steve Lawler and Radio Slave to look forward to. As we cross the road and enter the Space car park we are happy, we have enjoyed one of the finest aural entrées and we can’t wait to get our teeth into the main course. Space is an amazing venue, it can deliver a festival-like setting, as it does with the opening and closing fiestas, it can be a multi roomed super club, as it is every Sunday for We Love or it can become the coolest underground venue, as it does for Kehakuma, where the focus of the attention is on La Terraza.

Deep house, tribal house and everything on that underground tip has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance throughout clubland in the last couple of years and that is down to parties like Kahakuma sticking to a philosophy and working hard to educate the tourists that wander into their night along with satisfying the appetite of their legions of underground fans, hungry to hear the music they love. The line-ups have been inspired and the price to enjoy them has been more sensible than Ibiza has been for a number of years. This season has seen the likes of Nick Curly, Maya Jane Coles, Guy Gerber, Jamie Jones, Tiefschwarz, Seth Toxler and of course tonight’s protagonists Steve Lawler and Radio Slave, deliver cutting edge sets to an educated crowd, making it one of the must-play parties for all the underground DJs.

Tonights line up is no different to the rest of the season, there is talent on show wherever you happen to prefer getting your groove on. The Sunset terrace features Remo, Steffen Baumann and Ramon Castells, while the Red Box plays host to Jay Shepheard and Nicholas live but for us it has to be the Terrace where youANDme, Steve Lawler and Radio Slave will be navigating our particular journey. Berlin duo youANDme, aka Martin Mueller and Daniel Stroeter, are nearing the end of their set when we arrive but they have us hooked instantly, their groove is dark but with a very cool vibe and after a brief respite from thumping decibels as we made our way from the pre-party to Space, we are back in the game!

Next up Steve Lawler! This is a DJ that is synonymous with Ibiza; he is a popular member of the international touring set and has played on the island many times over the years. We were fortunate to catch up with Steve just after his set at the Space Opening Fiesta and having relocated to the island permanently he was loving his new surroundings and told us he was looking forward to playing Kehakuma this year because he felt it really fitted his style. Clearly things have gone well for him in his new home, he delivers an inspired set, littered with percussive masterpieces, basslines that demand that you move your feet and all assembled by someone at the very top of their game. Last but not least is Radioslave, who takes the trip on a mote tribal tip, unfortunately we have been at it since the very early hours of the afternoon and reluctantly admit defeat around the back of five. ‘Thursdays are the new Saturdays’ we declare as we make our way across the Space car park to try and grab a cab home!
