Formentera In Style With Five Flowers Hotel & Spa

After spending three of the most memorable days/ nights in the care of the wonderful team at Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera, I’m more than a little embarrassed to admit it was my first time staying over on our beautiful neighbouring island in all the years I have lived in Ibiza. What felt like another first, and gave me a completely new perspective was arriving to the harbour on the ferry, in all my previous trips, too many to count, I have been lucky to visit on a speed boat. Arriving at the harbour really reinforces the feeling you are visiting another island, one with its own history, identity and beauty.

When the invitation landed for the opening of Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera, the timing could not have been better. Our son, Raffy, was off on his first solo adventure with the school and his mates, meaning we could hook up with him after his trip and have some much needed family time after another hectic start to the year. Pulling into the harbour on board the ferry sparked memories of my first trip to Formentera, in 1984, how things have changed for me since then. For Formentera, the change has been a more gradual one, maintaining most of its original charm is what attracts so many visitors to the island during the summer. In fact, Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera is the island’s first five star resort! Located 150 metres from Es Pujoles beach, it promises a boho-chic experience like no other, and we couldn’t wait to get there.

Located in Es Pujols, the island’s only resort, Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera offers a level of luxury previously unavailable in the island. Combining boho-chic with elegance, the team behind the five-star resort has changed the face of Formentera hotel accommodation. The hotel offers a stylish but tranquil experience, from the carefully and comfortably designed 79 rooms and suites that enjoy spectacular sea views and are available in six categories – Boutique, Premium, Family, Sky, Suite and Grand Suite to the world class on-site spa, everything has been done to ensure you have a relaxing stay. Choose from an extensive pillow menu to make sure you get the pillow that is right for you; enjoy new technology within each room, including a 55 inch TV Bluetooth capabilities, USB and HDMI ports to allow you to plug and play all of your devices as well as a fully equipped terrace, where you can enjoy your view. The hotel also boasts 24-hour room service so you are only a phone call away from whatever you need.

The main event was on Saturday, with media from all over arriving to celebrate the opening alongside distinguished guests from Ibiza and Formentera. DJs delivered a cool soundtrack and there were mermaids playing violin in the pool! We had enough time to settle in and get to know the hotel before the party and we spent it wisely. Es Pujols beach is close by and well worth the trip. Stunning views, soft sand and those legendary, inviting turquoise waters. For those that prefer the pool, the sun loungers make for a comfortable base for the day and with the bar and Gastronomy restaurant close by, you never have to travel far. Gastronomy is also the location of a sumptuous buffet breakfast, which gets the day started in the best possible way, as well as host of the evening dinner and weekend brunch. For those looking for something special, Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera is also home to Michelin Star chef Hideki Matsuhisa and his Japanese/ Mediterranean fusion restaurant KOKOY. If you love Asian the intricacies of Asian cuisine and the freshness of the Mediterranean then this is a must try!

One of the highlights for us was the Sky Bar, which played a big part in the opening celebration. The 360 degree view of the island is nothing short of spectacular, sipping a refreshing cocktail, with a light breeze setting the perfect temperature, and a plunge pool to cool you down, it’s an ideal spot for socialising, romanticising or just for contemplation. Add in the view back to Ibiza and Es Vedra at sunset and you have the perfect Instagram post! The Saturday night was like a who’s who of Ibiza faces, with many of the prominent island characters making the short trip across and apart from the fact that none of us make enough use of this glorious island, the conversation was centred around just how right the team behind Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera has got it. Every detail has been thought of and covered, from the warm welcome and friendly but professional staff throughout the hotel and spa to the rooms with options on all sorts of pillow and the world class facilities. This is every bit a five star resort and more.

As hard as it was to drag ourselves away from Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera, we were determined to see more of the island as it was our first time staying over. On our first night we ventured over to the other coast and checked out beach club 10.7, an Italian affair where the staff made us feel right and home and the food was delicious. The promenade in front of the hotel makes for the ideal start of a walking adventure, whether that’s a short trip to the stunning sandy beach or a longer trip to the north of the resort. We found a selection of shops, bars and boutiques, although it’s fair to say it’s not the biggest resort.

At the far end of that walk we found one of our favourite restaurants I the world, Chez Gerdi. We have spent a lot of time in this amazing eatery in the last few years and we dropped in for lunch on Saturday. If you head south along the promenade it eventually becomes a wooden walkway, which is very interesting, and leads to another amazing spot, Bocasalina. With a fantastic view, a mouth-watering menu packed with seafood favourites, paellas and home cooked pasta and a warm welcome waiting from the amazing staff, this is one we would definitely recommend. We couldn’t leave Formentera without a trip to the famous Beso Beach, another long-time favourite of ours, that made our last day special. We reluctantly left Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera to return to Ibiza but with a determination to do much more exploring of our sister island. Formentera is packed with amazing paces to visit, some world-class dining options and, in Five Flowers Hotel & Spa Formentera, a genuine five star experience that you will never want to leave!
