Like a magnet, Ibiza has been attracting artists from all over the world for many decades and while it’s the island’s hedonistic nightlife that most often makes the headlines, the White Isle’s art scene is certainly alive, kicking – and thriving! From the expanding art district just outside of Ibiza Town to the refurbished salt storage unit exhibition space La Nave right next to the famous Salinas beach, hidden ateliers in the ‘campo’ fields to historic museums, your appetite for culture will be more than sated if you know where to go. Running until the 9th of May 2019, one display that art lovers should not miss is the ‘Collages Intimos’ exhibition by Spanish artist Mr. Reychel, which currently adorns the walls of the OD Talamanca hotel.

Desperate to see some colour on a grey spring afternoon, we went along to the opening of the exhibition on April 20th and, happy to tear away our eyes from cloudy skies and stormy waters, we immersed ourselves in the dreamy, surrealistic collages and their fantastical imagery. Held in collaboration with the Davide Campi Gallery, the artist behind the pseudonym, Raquel Martinez Royo, warmly welcomed her guests and took some time to explain her process and the inspiration behind the mesmerising pieces.

A self-taught photographer, graphic designer and artist, Mr. Reychel is constantly adding to her archive of original imagery, sharing it with family and friends and allowing it to settle before letting her deepest feelings, childhood memories and personal experiences arrange themselves into a motif that she then turns into intricate collages. Citing Spanish customs, matriarchy, cultural diversity and the post-war period as her influences, each work is instantly eye-catching, thought-provoking and captivating in its own unique way.

While at first your attention might be drawn by the vibrant colours, quirky combinations of symbols or simply the mood of a collage, what may look at first glance like a beautiful, even fairytale-esque scenery can, in the next instance, unveil a darker or disturbing meaning behind it. Pouring her thoughts and feelings out in the titles and the cards that accompany each image, Mr. Reychel isn’t holding back her innermost emotions when it comes to her art. And we weren’t surprised at all to find, within half an hour of the exhibition opening, that the little red ‘sold’ stickers had already appeared next to a lot of the collages. Striking, bold and, at times, haunting, ‘Collages Intimos’ will leave a mark on your mind and in your heart.
