It may be October, it may be the end of the season; but last night iconic San Antonio sunset spot Café Mambo threw a farewell fiesta that was befitting of the peak of high season! For the last hurrah of the 2018, Bob Sinclar himself headlined a line-up that also featured Ibiza favourites Danny O, Jason Bye and Ryan McDermott. Coinciding with the closing of the French superstar’s Pure Pacha: Paris By Night residency, we knew that the atmosphere would be electric. The weather couldn’t have been more glorious for the occasion and we were treated to some beautiful October sunshine as we arrived in the late afternoon to claim our spot on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the sparkling sea.

Spoilt by the welcoming Café Mambo team – all dressed up according to the French theme of the pre-party in striped tops and snazzy neckerchiefs – with exotic cocktails and crisp glasses of bubbly, we toasted the occasion with a Spicy Pineapple Mojito, frozen Strawberry Daiquiry and a berry and mezcal concoction. With a soulful house soundtrack drifting in our ears that ranged from deep and relaxed to funky on a disco tip, we happily watched the sun made its slow descend. The tables around us steadily continued to fill, while the world-famous Sunset Strip became ever busier.

By the time the sun finally met the waves on the horizon to a goosebump-inducing and dramatic melody, the whole of Café Mambo and the surrounding coastline was up on its feet to clap the fireball goodbye one last time. As if that wasn’t emotional enough, we also witnessed a marriage proposal and one lucky Café Mambo fan ended the day feeling like the luckiest man alive as his bride-to-be of course said ‘yes’. With emotions running high, enthusiastic cheering and the uplifting notes of Love Is In The Air, Bob Sinclar made his grand entrance with a posse of glamorous dancers clad in shimmering sequinned bodysuits. Bearing cut-out letters that spelled the word Pacha, they made their way to the famous sea-facing booth, where they were joined by a host of glamorous drag performers. Known for the OTT glitz and cabaret style of his Paris By Night concept, Monsieur Sinclar sure wasn’t planning on doing things by halves.

Within seconds, the chart-topping producer had the whole of Café Mambo on their feet, luring even passers-by on the strip to bust out some of their funkiest dance moves. He treated us to an infectious and irresistible mix of iconic disco anthems and classic house tunes before turning the energy up a notch. Taking us from Studio 54 with disco hits such as Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You by Gloria Gaynor and Thelma Houston’s Don’t Leave Me This Way to the late ‘90s with Mousse T’s Horny and Moloko’s Sing It Back, there wasn’t a soul in sight that wasn’t euphorically singing along and clapping to the beat. A few current floorfillers including Fisher’s Losing It and a pounding remix of Childish Gambino’s This Is America rounded off the selection nicely. With people of all nationalities and ages coming together to celebrate, the magic of Café Mambo and its feel-good vibes was never more evident than at last night’s incredible closing!
