It’s been a truly historic summer for the Cocoon crew, who, at the beginning of their 19th season on the White Isle, announced a jaw-dropping move to Pacha Ibiza. Not only that, but as well as filling out the newly revamped superclub week in, week out, Sven Väth and his team ticked off some further ‘firsts’ by popping some of their longstanding Cocoon family members’ Pacha cherry over the course of the summer, including Ricardo Villalobos and Nina Kraviz.

So it came as no surprise that for the grand finale, the iconic techno concept’s loyal following came flying in from all over the world to savour a last dance in the clubbing capital with Papa Sven and his peers. On the sonic menu for the night was a tasty mix of turntable heroes and up-and-coming talent; with Spanish maestro Cesar Vinzent, German-born vinyl fiend Andre Galluzzi and Cocoon matriarch Dana Ruh all billed for Room 2 while Seth Troxler and the man himself, Sven Väth, were in charge of the main room all night.

Arriving early to avoid the inevitable roadblock that would soon follow, we dipped into the intimate setting of Room 2, which was already bustling as Dana Ruh served up a bouncy and upbeat warm-up to the eager crowd. In the hazy, red mist of the dark room, only sporadically broken up by shards of light reflected from the mirror balls, we felt transported into a secret cave that perfectly reflected Cocoons underground aesthetic. She was followed by Andre Galluzi, who turned up the energy with driving beats and an energetic bassline, demanding stamina until the early hours of the morning.

Alas, the main room was calling, and with Seth Troxler smashing out a treat of a three-hour set we were keen to make the most of the remaining few inches of dancefloor space, which we knew would disappear shortly. Known and loved for his knack of putting together an eclectic and quirky musical journey, the US DJ did not disappoint as he showed off his skills by cleverly playing with multiple levels of basslines and isolated sounds, layering them with distorted samples as he hovered between his record bags and the turntables like a spaceship. Looking utterly at home in the Pacha booth, Troxler took us from deep and melodic soundscapes to infectious tribal drum effects, vintage ‘90s anthems to funky, dirty shreds, all in one effortless swoop.

When the time came for Papa Sven to step behind the decks the entire club was raring to continue; yet, despite a no-fuss arrival in the booth, Väth caused a bit of a standstill as people stopped dancing momentarily to catch a glimpse of the techno legend, clap and strain for a quick picture or video. Cool and collected as always, the German electronic music giant wasted no time and launched straight into an uplifting and melodic opening, all the better to pace himself for the thunderous basslines and galloping beats that would soon follow.

The beautiful Cocoon dancers in their metallic body armour were doing their best to keep up with the expertly dropped beats, visibly enjoying to unleash their energetic moves as they fired on the clubbers. As the night progressed, we lost ourselves in deep melodies with fuzzy basslines before being lured out of our trance-like state by trickling tech beats that snapped, crackled and popped over our heads as sharp as a whip. Intently watching the heaving dancefloor, Väth perfectly teased and timed big, dramatic drops with the icy bursts from the C02 cannon, not afraid to turn down the music to an almost complete standstill. After hours of dancing the night away, the universal conclusion was that Cocoon’s grand finale was a feast for all senses, and a befitting end to a ground-breaking year!
