Submission Whips Heart Into A Frenzy

For weeks in Ibiza there has been, to quote Dr Frank-N-Furter. a ‘shiver o antici… pation’. We’ve all been waiting for the return and reboot of the dark sexually liberated legend that is, ‘Submission’. In the 90s thousands attended this hedonistically-themed night including The Rolling Stones, Simply Red, Prince, Paul Oakenfold, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and many more secretive stars. Now, after almost a decade’s absence, Ronald Lloyd High Eliston – DJ Rubber Ron – has brought the decadent party back to Ibiza, the one place in the world with the spirit that suits it best. We’re here at Heart in Marina Botafoch to witness its kinky rebirth.

Now, it has to be said, when I was first asked by Essential Ibiza’s editor to write a review of this fetish-themed party I responded with more than a little trepidation. After all, as a journalist, you want to blend into your surroundings to some extent. ‘Will I have to wear latex?’ I asked, nervously. I don’t think I’m a man designed for rubber. And where would I put my notebook. Fortunately, he told me that I could stick to breathable fabrics, but, he added, intriguingly, that it might be an idea to bring a mask. (He’s not the first person to suggest this to me, but this time it was, as we shall see later, for practical rather than personally aesthetic reasons.)

There’s certainly no need for masks as we arrive at HEART to be greeted by two goddesses in shiny black with oh-so-sexy cat’s ears. The erotic atmosphere starts here. The club tonight has been transformed. It feels like some sort of hedonistic dungeon. The sound is deep and dark. The light-show filling the walls shows fleeting, almost subliminal, images of hedonism, chains and other pleasures from the realm of the senses. Now there are two dancers on the stage, gyrating lugubriously, almost gently, with whips. The sensuous atmosphere is contagious.

Looking round the crowded dancefloor, we needn’t have worried about the dress code. It’s a night of freedom and liberation. No matter what your kink, or lack of one, you won’t be out of place. But, as time passes the number of Ibiza’s sensuous creatures of the night gradually increases. Some are probably paid performers, others are just what passes for ‘normal’ on the crazy permissive little island of ours. It was hard to tell as the stage and dancefloor filled with spectacular glamorous and sexy dancers.

Submission has succeeded in bringing back a spirit that can sometimes feel as if it’s been lost to Ibiza. It’s the feeling that brings everybody together, no matter what their background or orientation. We chat to people who are visiting HEART Ibiza from their super-yacht moored in the harbour. They’re dancing with two people who are gardeners in the light of day and a handful of friends who make their living as cleaners. But, looking at them, you’d never know who came from where, although the gardeners were perhaps rather sexier than the guys from the yacht.

Then, as the night was slipping into languorous sensuality, Submission upped the atmosphere a notch. Well, more than a notch really, as sexy, sultry, house-music chanteuse Kathy Brown took to the stage. The normally New York-based diva never ceases to send shivers up our spines, especially with her remaking of Derrick May’s classic, ‘Strings of Life’. There are more than touches of Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston to her style, but with a tougher edge. Her appearance alone would have made for a fantastic night. After her performance we had to take a brief break from the dancefloor to catch our breath. It was then we found out what the mask was for. Hidden away upstairs is a special sensuous space to which only those who are suitably attired are admitted. So get your carnival mask on and head in. There you’ll find… Well, we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise for you. It’s up to you to cover your face and find out. Submission is at HEART Ibiza every Saturday through the summer.
