Tucked away from the busy bustling streets of San Antonio, Villa Mercedes is a gastronomic holiday haven with stunning sunset views overlooking the sea of boats docked, anchored and scattered across the west coast of the island. It’s the perfect place to settle down for the evening and experience a Mediterranean masterclass of food delights and cocktail wonders. Essential Ibiza headed down to this converted villa in the heart of San Antonio to try some culinary treats and delicious drinks.

We started with some cocktail recommendations from our courteous and experienced waiter Josh. With four to try – each unique, with a twist on some classic recipes – we were more than ready to quench our Ibiza thirst. The Herb Garden and Mojito with a touch of passion fruit had a refreshing taste with a leafy undertone that felt like holiday in a glass, but it was the Chilled Monkey Brains and Netflix & Chill that had heads turning – and they tasted as good as they looked. The Netflix & Chill – with Mezcal, grapefruit sorbet and two other juices – had a powerful and exhilarating taste, whereas the Chilled Monkey Brains with Havana 3, sugar syrup and strawberry sorbet was a little sweeter, but just as delicious.

With our thirst dealt with and our intrigue piqued thanks to the stunning presentation of the cocktails, we were excited to see what Villa Mercedes was going to bring from the kitchen. We started with a creamy burrata with three different types of tomato, along with a rich red tuna tataki with beetroot drizzle and a plate of Iberic ham and – of course – lightly toasted glass bread with tomato; the perfect accompaniment. The tuna had a soft yet meaty melt-in-your-mouth texture and the Iberic ham had an ideal smokiness to it with a distinct Ibizan flavour. After devouring the starters, head chef Miguel wasn’t finished with us just yet. A plate of moreish cod fritters arrived with a deliciously creamy tartare sauce, each crisped perfectly on the outside with a cotton-bud softness in the middle. Divine.

Villa Mercedes has been treating holidaymakers and locals alike since 1999, but for head chef Miguel, this is his first year at the restaurant and he’s brought with him a revised menu. Having come from Spain – with family from Mexico – Miguel has perfected his South American and Mediterranean inspired gastronomic fusion. He first cultivated his craft at Guadalajara University and has been a part of the Mambo food group for years now. We knew we were in capable hands – and we more than ready to see what mains Miguel has prepared for us.

First to arrive was a fresh and fiery langoustine Ceviche, alongside grilled octopus with an unbelievable purple potato mash. This was fish lovers dream and thankfully – being an island on the Mediterranean – Ibiza is fortuned with some of the freshest and tastiest seafood you’ll find anywhere on the planet. Both dishes paid true homage to Villa Mercedes and how it sources its ingredients. It was true holiday food, in an ideal holiday setting.

With our fish dishes tried, demolished and enjoyed, it was over to the meaty mains, where Miguel had prepared a wonderfully golden breaded on-the-bone Galician veal steak, as well as more classical fillet steak with fresh vegetables and crispy fries. Both had an inviting texture and the veal had a mellow meaty taste that could only really be described as delicious. The fillet steak was cooked to an ideal redness and had a flawless beefy flavour with a subtle undertone of smoke from the grill. Whether it’s fish or meat that takes your fancy, you can be assured that Villa Mercedes knows how to do both flawlessly.

After enjoying Villa Mercedes’ savoury offerings, it was time to pick-up a spoon and tuck-in to dessert. With a platter of sweet deliciousness in front of us, it was difficult to decide where to start. The fresh red fruit cheesecake was moreish with a tasty tanginess that added another flavour layer to this iconic dish. Personally, my favourite was the stone of chocolate with praline. It was heavenly. We weren’t done there, though, as we moved from dessert to dessert. Brioche with Horchata next to meet the spoon, with its soft, sweet centre and a lightly crisped crust, complimented perfectly by the sweet creamy Valencia milk. With a cactus sorbet, deconstructed lemon pie and a Heston Blumenthal inspired toffee apple creation still to go, Villa Mercedes’ more than treated us with its dessert selection – and a round of espresso martinis with some creamy chupitos put the cherry on top of a perfect evening by the San Antonio harbour.
