With an unrelenting roster of techno champions still set to make their mark on the Pacha dancefloor for the island’s much-loved Ibiza edition of the international institution that is Cocoon, this week saw a particularly exciting mingling of distinguished artists. Turning the glitzy superclub into a throbbing wormhole of fierce sounds and pounding basslines, the transformation into a warehouse-style fiesta was led by no other than the world-famous Richie Hawtin and cutting-edge talent Nastia. Carrying the torch for Germany, producers Einzelkind and Dana Ruh were billed to take over Room 2, completing yet another stellar line-up that once again proved that Cocoon remains utterly infallible.

A promising night of music on the cards, our trip to Cocoon was a date in the diary we were looking forward to and, by the volume of commotion coming from outside it was evident techno-heads from all over the island were raring for this one. Ukrainian-born Nastia, an up-and-coming face on the international scene, was our hotly anticipated act for the night. Known for her uncompromising, experimental sound, and not one to dish out the expected, she was knee-deep into her set when we stepped into the main room.

Underneath the glow of  lights, dancers in mirrored outfits threw mesmerising, distorted shapes to the industrial beats coming from the central booth. Nastia had the vibes high with her rapid, up-tempo and shapeshifting sounds; pulling the crowd from a heavy-duty fist-pump to a melodic march. Dishing out plenty of twisted breaks and rhythmic basslines, the floor was pulsating as people swarming staircases, balconies and the foyer gave their undivided energy to the entrancing sounds.

Meanwhile, in Room 2 melodic, uplifting house provided a contrasting soundscape as a break from the power-strong main room. Einzelkind and Dana Ruh were going back to back laying down a mixture of vinyl and digital track selections, taking us from funky and sexy to dark and cutting house. Earlier in the night, Einzelkind had opened the main room with a two-hour set exclusively filled with his own productions; a very rare treat for his fans and international music connoisseurs.

Turning Pacha completely upside down was Richie Hawtin’s finale, back inside, with the expectant crowd still out in force. Holding everyone firmly in the palm of his hand, dreamy synths intertwined with a rolling rhythm kicked things off before journeying ever deeper into the night with echoing sirens and kaleidoscopic sounds. Dancing until the very end, the tracks laid out were pure excellence; surprising, tantalising and addictively infectious. With Sven Väth, Peggy Gou and Nina Kraviz still to come, there is plenty more reserved in the pipeline – Cocoon delivers yet again!
