With its unrivalled music scene, every summer Ibiza offers electronica lovers not only the chance to listen to the world’s biggest DJs, but also to discover creative and new talent. Making a splash on the White Isle in 2019 is French selector Michael Canitrot, who has landed his first residency at the illustrious Lio Ibiza – no mean feat considering the high competition for booth time on this island!

Then again, it seems that the Parisian turntable maestro has always been destined for an extraordinary musical career. Starting to DJ in his childhood days, Michael was barely an adult when he began to play at iconic venues such as the Queen and Les Bains Douches in the French capital. Catching the attention of Bob Sinclar, who he now calls a mentor and friend, he has worked with many of the Paris DJ greats and developed his own party brand “So Happy in Paris”. Off the back of this success, he was invited to soundtrack the red carpet at the world-famous Cannes Film Festival, where he stayed for the next eight years. His stellar rise continued into the fashion industry, where the likes of Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Versace, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Pierre Hermé entrusted him with curating the perfect sound for their most exclusive events. We caught up with the talented trailblazer on the White Isle to find out more…

Congratulations on your first Ibiza residency! It must be amazing to conquer what is widely considered the clubbing capital of the world?
I’ve been coming for the opening and closing parties for many years, but this is my first Ibiza residency, so of course it’s hugely important to me. I have been invited to play as a guest a few times before and I’m really happy at Lio, with both the venue and the team. The support from the Pacha Group has been amazing. I feel completely at home at Pop Art on Tuesday nights.

How would you describe the night?
I am from Paris so the idea is to bring a little bit of my city and its eclectic spirit to Ibiza every Tuesday. I’m playing every week and I have chosen some exciting guests to join me. The music is mainly house and deep house but we like to throw in some classics, too, taking the clubbers on a journey that has different moods throughout the night. The crowd is amazing and every night is a new challenge because you have people from all over the world on the dancefloor who really love the music, so for me as an artists it’s important to give my best here.

France has launched some huge musical superstars. Which French DJs are you close to?
I met Bob Sinclar a few years ago when I came to one of his parties in Paris and I was in the DJ booth all night observing him like a hawk! After that, I visited his studio and we talked about music and parties. I really respect Bob as an artist and he has given me a lot of advice. I really enjoy talking to him about music, but also other things. We have become friends.

You started to DJ incredibly young. What sparked your early passion for music?
I was born into a musical family. My father was a DJ on a radio station in Paris and my mother was a big fan of soul music like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, so I have grown up surrounded by vinyl records and turntables! I started to play at private parties when I was only ten or 11 years old and my first professional gig was in Paris when I was 17. It wasn’t legal, of course, but I changed my ID because I had the chance to play at the legendary club Les Bains Douches, which was owned by Cathy and David Guetta.

You have also made impressive moves into the fashion and film industries. What is that like?
The fashion and movie industries play a big part in my career. I was the official DJ for the Cannes Film Festival for eight years and I got to meet a lot of designers through that, who invited me to play at their shows. To make people like Quentin Tarantino dance on the red carpet is really fun! Now I mainly focus on clubs or festivals, but it is always fun to play at a fashion or movie event because the challenge is totally different. The music is very eclectic, so you have to be curious and search for new and unusual things.

What inspires you?
The most important thing for me is to see people have vibrations and fun on the dancefloor. When I feel the emotion and that connection with the crowd, that’s my favourite part. It’s a gratitude, a very special moment that brings me closer to people even without knowing them personally. And of course, I always want to create new things musically to push my sets further. With my team, we also want to take house music outside of the clubs and create a new type of event with a unique atmosphere. For example, we have recently performed at iconic venues such as the Palace of Versailles and the Eiffel Tower, or on a deserted beach in Brazil… just to create the unexpected and unforgettable memories!

And when you have some down-time on Ibiza, what do you like to do?
There is a beautiful boutique hotel close to Santa Eulalia called Les Terrasses, which is owned by a French chef called Francoise Pialoux. It is so peaceful and I like to go there to recharge my batteries and just chill out. The food there is also great! And if I go to the beach, I love to go to Cala Comte or take a boat to Illetes beach in Formentera. I love to be connected to nature to balance out the craziness of the nightlife.

You can catch Michael Canitrot at Lio’s Tuesday night concept Pop Art on selected dates until the closing on October 1st.
