It was the event that had the island buzzing from the word go, causing excitement amidst live music fans back in spring when it was announced that the almighty LCD Soundsystem would perform at Ibiza Rocks. Jetting in especially to help the iconic brand celebrate its 11th birthday – and, word has it, to record their new studio album on the White Isle – the American electro rock band set the stage alight on July 6th with one of their first gigs after a five year hiatus.

Fresh from playing Glastonbury Festival in the UK, the multi-piece honoured Ibiza Rocks entering its second decade with a rip-roaring set that featured one killer track after the next with pitch-perfect vocals, ferocious drums and screaming guitars that showed the island once more why the alternative music concept has been so successful.

It was a more than fitting choice of programming seeing that it was a seminal LCD Soundsystem gig back in 2004, when they brought their addictive sound of indie, rock and dance music to the Music Box for Manumission’s 10th birthday, that convinced founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle that here was a place for live music on the island. Two further unforgettable headline shows they subsequently played at Ibiza Rocks Bar (2007) and Ibiza Rocks Hotel (2010) now stand out as two of not just the most significant Rocks events of all time, but also as some of the most significant White Isle music moments.

As huge LCD Soundsystem fans, the Essential Ibiza crew had been getting excited for this special gig for – literally – weeks. In fact, we were so keen, we were some of the first people to arrive, securing ourselves a space right in front of the stage and warming up to a DJ set packed with classic floor fillers that had everyone busting out their best moves. With no support act, everyone’s attention was intently focused on the arrival of the band, the anticipation tangible in the intimate outdoor venue.

At 10pm sharp, the considerable number of LCD Soundsystem members casually wandered onto stage as comfortably as if they had just strolled into our living room for movie night, a deceivingly low-key entrance that betrayed the explosive set that was to follow. Drummer and vocalist Pat Mahoney – an absolute machine on the percussions – immediately flew into the opening beats of Us Vs Them, a funky little number with a slow but steady build-up that got the audience warmed up for an evening of unadulterated rock glory. The song that everyone was waiting for took us by surprise when it dropped literally as the second track, with front man James Murphy generating a storm of screams as he released the unmistakable sharp two opening shouts of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House. They served as a rallying cry for the audience, which was going nuts for the hit, jumping and hollering with total and utter delight on their faces.

Favourites like Yeah, I Can Change and Losing My Edge followed, all crowd-pleasing tunes that had the fans going wild as soon as they recognised each track, which was pretty much on the opening note for every single song on the set list. And while LCD Soundsystem are renowned for their catchy tunes, what really made this such an amazing show was to see the passion and camaraderie with which they performed. Pat Mahoney looked like he was in an almost trance-like state for most of the gig, relentlessly hammering his kit in either slow, teasing beats or at lightning speed. Considering the band had announced they were breaking up five years previously, there was absolutely no awkwardness or air of reluctance to return to the stage, with everyone looking utterly at ease not only performing but also amongst each other.

Time passed way too quickly and all of a sudden we were watching the encore, James Murphy’s impeccable vocals belting out Dance Yrself Clean and Your Friends as we began to realise the fun would be over soon. With myriads of sparkling light shards reflected onto the walls of Ibiza Rocks Hotel and light effects illuminating the dark night sky, the atmosphere was pretty special; a happy and peaceful gathering of people who share a love of music and were psyched to see this amazing band during what is bound to be a seminal year in the history of LCD Soundsystem.
