As the Balearics’ pioneering eco-friendly boat charter company, protecting the fragile environment in which they operate their ‘green’ catamaran tours is at the heart of the La Bella Verde team’s mission. Their fleet of solar-powered catamarans is one of the most peaceful and environmentally-conscious ways to explore the stunning crystal waters that surround the company’s HQ in Ibiza, as well as the neighbouring island of Formentera.

Aiming higher than many when it comes to protecting Mother Nature, the young and dynamic crew is invested in educating others about sustainability and proactively participates in environmental initiatives such as the recent Global Cleanup Day. We joined them on the powdery white sands of their home beach in the Salinas Nature Park for a beach clean and to talk about their charitable work with the LBV Foundation.

Charlie, co-founder of La Bella Verde and a trained marine biologist, told us, “What we’re planning to do with the foundation is to organise a lot more of these kind of beach clean-ups in the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Salinas and Espalmador, as well as educate from our base here on the beach by getting schools involved and getting the younger generations excited about renewable energy and the conservation of our oceans. But we also want to go into local businesses – the supermarkets, the restaurants, the hotels – and consult them on how to reduce their plastic waste and how to improve their recycling. With the funds we raise through the foundation, we can pay for them to make simple changes like swapping plastic wrapping for paper bags, for example.”

As well as donating 1% of the profits made from every charter booked to their own foundation, the La Bella Verde team also joins forces with other local organisations like the Ibiza Preservation Fund, Oceanic Global, Save Posidonia Project and PROARTSO. Taking part in their most recent collaboration with Beso Beach Ibiza, PROARTSO’s Nature Project and Ibiza Limpia, we witnessed first hand how much fun it can be to participate in a good cause. With several keen volunteers combing the beach to pick up bottle tops, plastic wrapping, cigarette buts and other waste, a recycling station was set outside the stylish seaside restaurant to organise the rubbish.

Splitting up into cleaning teams, the La Bella Verde gang descended upon the waters to fish floating garbage out of the waves, while the PROARTSO team showed off its impressive artistic skills by showing interested passers-by young and old how to transform the rubbish into creative pieces of arts, such as plastic flowers. Some of their bigger sculptures, which are crafted from recovered waste and include animal statues that serve as a stark reminder of whose habitats our out of control wastage is destroying, were being put up for display in Beso Beach Ibiza.

The source of much interest and delight, a group of beauties dressed up in mermaid costumes also made with recycled rubbish, were carried into the crystal clear sea to raise awareness amongst the crowds sunbathing and splashing in the waves. Nature Project manager Sophia told us, “A part of this performance is to go up to the boats with our mermaids and pirates and congratulate the captains who are moored in the right place because anchoring in the Posidonia, the marine plants that surround the island, destroys them. They are the reason why the waters are so clear here and they provide all of us with oxygen, so they are really, really important. But it’s good to see that more and more people are becoming aware of the environmental issues affecting the island.”
