‘Well, hello there, Mr Harris. It’s been a while!’ I’m not entirely sure exactly when Calvin Harris last graced the White Isle’s DJ booths, but my humble research leads me to believe that it was sometime around 2015 – which feels like a lifetime measured in Ibiza seasons. Therefore I was under no illusion that, when it was announced in May that the chart-topping producer would play an exclusive three shows at Pacha Ibiza this summer, the by now highest paid DJ in the world’s appearances at Tuesdays On Mars would become one of the hottest tickets of the summer.

Last night saw the Scottish mega star cut the ribbon on this mini series of gigs at the home of the twin cherries, and, as predicted, he had the club bursting at the seams. Pacha’s new intergalactic concept for 2018 has already proven itself as a huge success thanks to a line-up filled with iconic names such as Fatboy Slim, Claptone and Alesso amongst others. And with Calvin’s chart success elevating him into the Olympus of electronic music Gods in recent years thanks to a slew of hot collaborations with the likes of Rihanna, Pharrell, Disciples and Florence Welch, enthusiastic clubbers arrived from all corners of the island to see him in action.

When we arrived, the party palace was already buzzing as Generik treated the crowd to one feel-good floorfiller after the next. We entered the main room to the haunting notes of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love being teased into an epic build, the release of the drop sending the clubbers wild. Hitting just the right balance between iconic anthems and new releases, we couldn’t resist grooving along to hits like Fisher’s Stop It, Camelphat’s Cola and Insomnia by Faithless.

With a giant pair of cherries covered in shards of glass like a fruity discoball framed by an asteroid belt dangling over the DJ booth, the dashboard of a spaceship projected onto the walls, rockets decorating the pillars surrounding the dancefloor and silver meteors suspended from the ceiling, the main room most certainly looked the part for a night on Mars. Dancers dressed in sexy, futuristic spacesuit costumes and Martian helmets were firing on the revellers – not that they needed it as the space began to fill up further and further.

The arrival of Mr Harris was meet with excited screams and a sea of mobile phones rising up to film a glimpse of the superstar, yet when he finally took over the decks, he did so without any fuss or fanfare. No confetti explosions or grand entrance marked the beginning of his set, but he did treat his fans to a sample of Rihanna’s silky vocals from This Is What You Came For before launching into a chunky, energetic bassline.

Throughout the night, he carefully tread the line of acknowledging the iconic anthems of his peers – the legendary tones of Fatboy Slim’s Right Here Right now causing goosebumps in the darkened room as lasers cut through the hazy air – and his own chart successes, including his most recent hit One Kiss feat. Dua Lipa. Well, what can we say, it was exactly what we came for. Good to have you back, Mr Harris.
