Cocoon and Ibiza are a match made in dance music heaven. As it celebrates its 20th anniversary, the German techno party concept fronted by the legendary Sven Väth has been indispensable to the island. Cocoon is an experience like no other. Its music is exceptional, its followers are free-spirited and its beliefs of how to make a night special are unapparelled. 20 years of Cocoon means 20 years of memories for many. I got to experience my first ever Cocoon at Amnesia for its grand season opener.

The first time I went to Cocoon was last year at Pacha. I most likely spent more time there than at any other party that season. Having had so many amazing nights by the marina last summer, a mixture of excitement, apprehension and intrigue filled me as we travelled to Amnesia, where it all started two decades ago. Walking in my dancing partner (who’s been a Cocoon follower for over 10 years) pointed-out the huge jellyfish that draped the roof above the hallowed Amnesia terrace. It was an injection of nostalgia administered by Sven and co. You just knew this one was going to be special.

German disco and house royalty Gerd Janson was hitting it heavy as we threw ourselves in the mix. Despite the night being early, the energy on the dancefloor was boiling over. Gerd was laying out some heavy beats as he went a little darker than usual. Gordon by DJ Tennis was a captivating selection and had the Cocoon faithful throwing body parts around like no-one has ever seen before. This was a different kind of Gerd Janson set – and it was perfect.

With the terrace scorched and ready, Sven Väth entered the booth with even more fire. Starting with Kerri Chandler’s Atmosphere, the dance music icon was modelling the perfect soundtrack for a typically brilliant Cocoon affair, just as he’s been doing for 20 years. It was time to put the seatbelt on and let Sven take the wheel until the early hours as he moved from all kinds of genres. Rebuke’s Jump Ship, Nevergreen by Johannes Volk and Mano Le Tough’s remix of Spectrum by Erol Alkan can help explain just how varied this set was. Sven was in command.

The terrace was buzzing, but we had to give Cocoon mainstay and Drumcode favourite Ilario Alicante a listen. He closed my first ever Cocoon experience, which signed, sealed and delivered my membership to the German techno super-brand. Tonight he was just as first-class. Keep on delivering, Ilario.

It was time for a second helping of Sven. The party showed no signs of dying out. Amnesia was ecstatic and the terrace roof quite literally came off – jellyfish and all – when the Papa dropped Tim’s Symphony by Benny Rodrigues’ Younger Rebinds moniker. A big tune for this summer, laid-out perfectly at one of the biggest parties of this summer. Celebrate 20 years of Cocoon and make your own memories. There’ll be many more to come.
