There were mixed emotions in Playa d’en Bossa yesterday as crowds made their way to Ushuaia Beach Hotel for the last ever Avicii party. The last five years has seen the Swedish superstar create countless memories for his army of fans as he dominated Sunday overlooking the beach. With the announcement of his retirement from touring earlier this year giving Ibiza 2016 an extra edge, each show has been bursting at the seams with clubbers keen to sample one last session with the crossover hot maker before he hangs up the head-phones.

The outdoor arena was packed from early on, electronic music lovers from all over the world making sure they savoured every minute of the final ever Avicii party and with a line up that also included KSHMR, Seeb, Albin Myers, Mambo Brothers and Josefin Risén, there was plenty to celebrate before the main man took to the famous stage one last time. Mambo Brothers were in full swing when we landed, a duo that is more than familiar with Ibiza, having virtually grown up in the Café Mambo DJ booth witnessing the world’s biggest and best playing nightly. Nowadays, they have their own sound, have honed their skills perfectly and can be seen rocking dancefloors all over the world.

The clear blue sky and searing August heat is doing nothing to curb the enthusiasm of the capacity crowd as the distinctive figure of Albin Myers takes over on stage. Hair standing perfectly on end as he continues the gradual elevation of a crowd that really needs no revving up, painfully aware of the circumstances surrounding this particular gig and while it shows each artist the appreciation that they deserve, it is clearly desperate for the arrival of the main protagonist. Seeb accepts the baton next and moves the party up a gear, chunky beats and throbbing basslines setting the scene perfectly as the heat finally starts to go out of the afternoon sun and it gets set for that magical transition into night.

KSHMR has enjoyed fantastic success recently, his current EP, Lion Across The Field has caught the imagination of lovers of big room electronic music the world over and he is enjoying appearing at numerous huge outdoor events this summer. Not many that can live up to this particular booking however, as the clubbing capital says goodbye to one of its favourite sons. Night has descended and the outdoor arena moves into after dark mode, the lights around the hotel offer a warm glow and the production from the huge stage come into their own. The giant screen behind the booth is visible during the day but it is positively dominating after the sun goes down. Add to that the anticipation levels ramping up as the huge crowd realizes that the last artist to take the stage is on the way.

Avicii was already a he global star when he took up his Sunday residency in Ushuaïa Beach Hotel five years ago and wasted no time making himself at home, with capacity crowds turning out throughout the debut season. The five years that have followed have seen the Swedish DJ/ producer deliver countless world class line ups filled with experience and hot new talent, all offering the thousands that flock to the open air venue every week a big room electronic sound. There have been numerous moments that will live long in the talented spinners memory but surely none that match the roar he received as he took the stage for the last time.

If anyone was feeling nostalgic or choking back the tears, it didn’t show, the eruption heralded the start of his last performance and, he didn’t disappoint. It’s fair to say that this style of electronic music is not everyone’s cup of tea and the purists will never get tired of bashing it but when you witness 10,000 people going crazy for something they clearly love, it’s a site to behold! Avicii runs through some of his classic cuts that have dominated dancefloors all over the world and the huge crowd needed no pushing to sing along. This was more of a celebration than a farewell, with everyone out to enjoy every last minute of the final performance.

Ushuaïa exploded with various pyrotechnical displays that accompanied tension building breakdowns, sparks jetted into the night sky lighting up the front of the stage and sending a wave of heat across the first half of the crowd, which reacted in unison to show its delight. In what seemed no time at all, the beats finally gave way to a wall of noise as the crowd to a man stood and saluted Avicii, for the amazing performance on the day and for the five years he has poured into the weekly Sunday party. Artists, crew and some of the men behind the popular concept filled the stage for one last selfie alongside the artist and 10,00 of his fans and it was time to go. Avicii will retire to the Ibiza history books and the beat will continue…
