The picturesque village of Santa Gertrudis at the heart of the island has established itself as a well-known foodie destination over the years. One of the shining jewels in its crown is the rustic chic restaurant and cocktail bar Finca La Plaza, conveniently located right on the bustling church square that comes to life at night. With a lush garden and seating options both inside and out, it’s the perfect spot for an atmospheric evening meal with your better half or the whole family!

We popped in on a tranquil July night, seeking refuge from the sweltering heat and sustenance from the fresh, flavoursome Mediterranean cuisine that have won the elegant eatery a loyal following. With its straw lampshades, eye-catching hanging chairs that resemble wooden cocoons and tropical foliage juxtaposed against the white pebbled ground, Finca La Plaza is the epitome of countryside cool and totally Instagram-worthy wherever you look!

We took our seats right on the border where the iron-framed glass doors open up into the garden and decided to start the night with a potent cocktail. The signature Spritz La Plaza, the venue’s take on the popular summer drink, livened up the classic recipe with a touch of elderflower and basil to tease the palette. Meanwhile, the aromatic Mezcal Margarita wowed with its smoky notes and a zesty citrus flavour explosion. Within seconds, the attentive Finca La Plaza team sent over a cheeky amuse bouche of a sun-ripened tomato filled with creamy ricotta cheese, a delicious teaser of things to come. Meanwhile, a basket filled with delightfully squidgy and soft bread, green olives and aromatic aioli kept our hunger pangs at bay while we perused the menu.

With each and very plate combing a variety of fresh Mediterranean produce and tempting delicatessen from sea and land, for the longest time we couldn’t decided until our friendly waiter stepped in and made some welcome recommendations. We began our feast with a plate of mouth-watering grilled artichokes dressed in a simple lemon dressing and topped with a fragrant spinach and mint salad – the perfect light summer starter. Meanhwile, the sautéed baby squid, topped with roasted Iberian ham and served in a tantalising combination of parsley and garlic oil, wowed with its contrasting textures and divinely balanced flavours. Although both of the dishes came from the ‘small plates’ section, trust us, the portion sizes were generous and they served easily as a satisfying starter.

While we eagerly awaited our main course choices, the garden had begun to fill up with couples on a romantic date and families getting together for a relaxed but sophisticated dinner. Our meal continued in style with a bowl of perfectly ‘al dente’, homemade burrata ravioli served with a luxurious creamed courgette, fresh mint and tomato dressing. From the textures to the flavours, it was indulgent perfection. On the other end of the spectrum, the healthy and light seabass fillet was a masterclass in how to serve fish, the meat moist and juicy with a crackling crispy skin and dressed in a fragrant tomato, caper, lemon and basil sauce. A colourful tomato salad bursting with flavours completed our selection.

Reluctant to leave our atmospheric, peaceful dinner spot – an oasis of relaxation amidst high season madness – we accepted the kind offer of dessert. The ‘Cremoso di Gianduia’ was pure decadence on all levels. Gianduia is a luxurious spread made from fine chocolate and hazelnuts said to have been invented in Turin, Italy, during Napoleon’s reign in the 18th century. At Finca La Plaza, it has been worked into a divine concoction on a rich, crumbly base and a sprinkling of crunchy nuts. All senses sated, we left with firm plans to return and show this hidden gem off to all our foodie friends! For gourmets who love simple, fresh Mediterranean plates full of flavour, there couldn’t be a better spot for an atmospheric dinner.
