Aint Nothing But A Party

Posted on August 19, 2012

In the short time it has been open, Atzaro Beach has provided us with numerous excuses to visit them – from a simple but delicious lunch on the beach, dinner at the official opening party to a spiritual celebration of the full moon, and tonight, with the restaurant tables making way for a dancefloor, Atzaro Beach gets its groove on! It’s the generation game; kids with groovy parents and the young team, with a finger on the pulse of every great party, mix with seasoned bohemians, as an eclectic bunch of time travellers descends on Cala Nova for 1971, the fabulous Friday night foray brought to us by Jezebel – “Aint Nothing But A Party.”

1971 invite us to take a stroll along the Balearic Boardwalk for daytime dancing to ‘discolated beachnik house’ in the company of DJs on rotation throughout August, Groove Armada, Horse Meat Disco, Bing Ji Ling (Phenomenal Hand Clap Band), DJ Lottie, Sophie Lloyd and The Straight A’s. The BBQ is set up at the edge of the small cliff overlooking Cala Nova Beach but it’s the cocktail bar set up alongside it that grabs our attention, I can’t help but wonder what they would have made of the Mojito back in the ‘70s but here in the present, we are loving them! Horse Meat Disco is in charge of the booth, represented by Severino, enjoying a successful summer as resident of Ushuaia’s latest success story, Pool Disco. He bobs about behind the decks, dropping nugget after nugget and taking us on a journey from deep house to disco and back.

As the sun finally says its goodbyes and disappears for the night, the dancefloor becomes the focal point and starts filling up. Faces from all over the island have arrived, music legend Arthur Baker amongst them and the distinctive figures of Groove Armada, clearly enjoying Severino’s set as they prepare to take centre stage for the second Ibiza instalment of their Rockers Revenge. Atzaro Beach provides the perfect location for a party, the huge sails that cover the terrace provide the perfect acoustics for the monster sound system and the view down the cliff, across the beach and out to sea provides a dramatic backdrop. The floor is full now and the atmosphere is amazing, Severino has delivered the perfect warm up, preparing the crowd for the arrival of a duo that has headlined every festival worth headlining and as Groove Armada takes control of the booth there’s a roar of expectation.

What follows is a masterclass as Andy Cato and Tom Findlay show why they are one of the most lethal musical combinations on the planet, taking us from house to deep house, to tech house, to disco with an odd stop off for some classic house – the likes of Pump Up The Jam and Someday evoking nostalgic memories all round. Special mention has to go to the sound system, this is more akin to a small festival than a beach front gathering, the sound is crystal clear and even right in front of the speakers, where it is at its most fierce, it’s not uncomfortable! Ibiza has a knack of delivering these unlikely get togethers, providing magical moments in unique settings; the great news is that in Atzaro Beach, we have another outstanding venue that looks determined to play its part in Ibiza’s memory making machine!

As is usually the case when you are having the most fun, it finishes long before you would have hoped and midnight is upon us in no time. Groove Armada step back from the decks, accepting the adulation from the satisfied crowd with huge grins, trying to resist the temptation to give into the cries for one more tune. As they do so, Severino pops up and sticks another track on and as the beat kicks back in the floor goes mental and we’re off again! He manages to stretch another 15 minutes out before a very large but extremely patient security person suggests it might be time to call it a night, which Severino does with a couple of disco nuggets to finish the party off. Jezebel’s ‘1971’ will be hosting every Friday through August and if tonight is anything to go by, you’re not gong to want to miss them. For now though, it’s time to drag ourselves back into the ‘teenies’ and head for Aura where Ibiza legend DJ Antz lives on a Friday night, but that’s another story…
