Any amount of time spent on Ibiza can treat you to those inimitable White Isle ‘wow moments’ and we experienced another memorable occasion this week when we enjoyed a leisurely team lunch in the blissful surroundings of the laid-back and charming YemanjáIbiza. Opening its doors over 30 years ago in the white-pebbled bay of Cala Jondal, the al fresco restaurant is open 365 days a year and has built a reputation on its mouth-watering Mediterranean cuisine. But, no matter how many times you have visited before, catching that first glimpse of the turquoise waters lapping the dazzling shore from the breezy terrace will never get old.

Since it was taken over by the renowned Blue Marlin Ibiza Group, Yemanjá’s evolution has seen the rustic chic eatery reach new heights. And while it rubs shoulders with its world-famous sister property, the glamorous Blue Marlin Ibiza, the Yemanjáexperience offers an altogether different vibe. Authentic, relaxed and welcoming, it’s a place where you can bring all of your nearest and dearest for a leisurely meal – children, grandparents and pets included! Led to our table by the lovely Alessandra, who gave us a quick tour of the restaurant and bar area, we were given a choice to sit either inside the newly renovated, glass-fronted dining room or directly on the powdery sands. While the prospect of the climate-controlled and shaded interior space was tempting, the views on the sparkling Balearic Sea won us over and we braved the sweltering July temperatures.

Before we had even picked up the drinks menu, our host for the day, Dario, had delivered a basket full of perfectly squidgy bread rolls, a generous portion of aioli and a plate of fresh sardines. Catching us on a rare saintly day, we opted for a selection of colourful juices from the dedicated Healthy And Detox Menu over cocktails or wine. The Green Detox was pure rebalancing goodness thanks to its alkalising mix of cucumber, celery, lime, apple and spirulina, while The Classic offered a Vitamin C injection in the shape of apple, carrot, orange and ginger ingredients. The Wonder Melon – watermelon, pineapple, mint and ginger – and the exotic Dragon Royal – an extravaganza of dragon fruit, strawberry, grape, cranberry and honey – completed our wellness-inspired drinks order.

In the blink of an eye, a huge tray filled with a colourful selection of summer starters arrived at the table. Yemanjá champions traditional Spanish and Mediterranean dishes made with premium produce, the menu nicely balanced between ‘naughty and nice’ plates, healthy and indulgent options represented alike. We shared a perfectly charcoaled grilled octopus leg served with tender potato slice, pickled onions and orange and green romescu sauces; the texture satisfyingly dense but not chewy. A luscious Burrata cheese was served on a bed of rocket leaves, sundried tomato chunks and fresh tomato slices with the addition of tender smoked sardines adding a delicious salty edge to the creation. Another table instant table favourite, silky seabass tartare intermingled with crunchy apple, tropical mango and creamy avocado chunks wowed with both flavours and textures, while the vibrant Mediterranean-style quinoa salad brimming with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, green and red peppers, sweet onion, cucumber, pistachio and mint proved that eating healthy can be far from boring!

Enjoying a lunch by the sea, we felt it would be positively rude not to share one of Yemanjá’s spectacular paellas. Having seen the huge, steaming pans filled with rice and seafood goodness float past us to other tables, our appetite was thoroughly whetted. While there are no less than ten different varieties – including meat, vegetarian and noodle options – we opted for the signature “Yemanjá“ paella. Our eyes almost popped out of our heads when the golden rice jam-packed with clams, prawns, chunks of monkfish and the slightly more unusual sea cucumber was placed in front of us. From its colourful appearance to its fragrant aroma, the contrast of textures to the carefully balanced and simply delicious flavours, it was a feast for all senses.

Bellies fit to burst but reluctant to leave the chilled ambience and gorgeous views, we let ourselves be convinced (clue: it didn’t take much) to stay for coffees and desserts. Minutes later, a huge platter with a selection of colourful sweet treats was place between us, opening a spoon war to secure our favourite bites! The Chocolate Delight was rich in flavour and reminded us of a huge, haute cuisine jaffa cake, while tiramisu lovers should not leave without trying the fluffy-as-a-cloud Café Jondal Mousse. The White Peach Cheesecake offered a light, summery gourmet take on the international favourite, and – last but not least – the Coconut Flan with Pineapple Sorbet was a tropical dream. Reluctantly, we decided to leave before we would fall victim to a food coma. But, with Yemanjáopen not only for the famous ‘lazy summer lunches’, but also sunset cocktails and atmospheric dinners, we knew it wouldn’t be long before we return…
