Cocoon is an outright clubbing institution with unparalleled musical heritage. Bringing some of the finest techno acts from across the world to the island for 20 years now, Cocoon is still evolving and still providing those real White Isle memories that have us coming back, each summer and every week. For this September starter, Sven Väth left his techno superbrand in the capable hands of Ben Klock, Nina Kraviz, Ilario Alicante, Sonja Moonear, Dana Ruh and Edward. Here’s what happened at the eighth instalment of this year’s Cocoon at Amnesia.

From Berghain to the Balaerics, Ben Klock has been bringing his drum-heavy brilliance to the island for many summers now. The techno don has followers in the thousands. It was no surprise to see Amnesia’s famous Terrace pumping wall-to-wall, beat-to-beat, to Ben Klock’s proper Berlin-style sound, but only after fellow German Dana Ruh opened proceedings. This west-of-the-Rhine sound was perfectly paired with the club’s all-new, bespoke KV2 sound system. With the bass turned-up to maximum, Klock’s thunderous selections left no shoe static and this felt like a classic, unrelenting Cocoon set.

Now it was time to step into Amnesia’s main room offering, where Nina Kraviz was ready to showcase her unique acid techno sound. Catching the last part of Sonja Moonear, the darker space of the club was filling fast thanks to her rolling sound. With the room more than warmed and ready, Kraviz entered and started with that heaviness we’ve come to know and love her for. Blending beefy techno with a touch of trance and a drop of acid, the Russian native stuck to her sound and had us stuck to the dancefloor in an unshazamable dream. Nina is on fire at the moment.

With Sven away for this one, Italian house and techno hero – and Cocoon favourite – Ilario Alicante, was on terrace closing duties. Following Ben Klock, Ilario started more on the techno side, before moving into more melodic territory with a focus on more vocal-focused selections. The Ibiza regular is finally receiving the plaudits he deserves. Keep an eye out on Ilario Alicante in the future. His consistently brilliant performances across the island have won him more than a few fans. This Cocoon closing set was no exception. Luckily, he’s back for the German superbrand’s Amnesia closing on Monday, September 30th.
