If you’re looking for a special dining experience, away from the bustling tourist resorts, where authenticity and tradition feature heavily then recently opened Can Mimosa, in Santa Gertudis, is the one for you. The charming village, in the centre of the island, offers a cool, bohemian vibe and is home to a selection of fantastic bars and restaurants, not to mention stylish boutiques, and a visit is well worth making the effort to leave your resort. Add the warm welcome and mouth-watering menu that awaits at Can Mimosa, the locally sourced farmhouse cuisine that has captured the heart of locals and tourists in-the-know, and it’s a must.

Can Mimosa is located in a 200 year-old finca, one of the oldest buildings in Santa Gertrudis, oozing history and character and al fresco dining at its very best. The garden restaurant is the perfect spot for a long, lazy lunch with friends or an intimate evening with your better half and the bar offers a range of tapas if you are in the mood for a snack. The concept is the brain child of Pedro Cervero, Tim Payne and Holly Rees Thomas, three people who are acutely aware of what it takes to operate in Ibiza. Previously together at successful beach club Sands, as well as independently at many Ibiza favourites, the trio understands the island, are deeply connected to Ibiza and have a passion for food and community that shines through Can Mimosa. In five short weeks, the restaurant has made a big impact on residents on the island and has welcomed more than its fair share of those tourists that make a point of checking out the hottest new destinations.

Al fresco dining is one of the island’s most popular past times, with a number of spectacular destinations boasting jaw dropping views. While Can Mimosa is located in the heart of the island, it offers a chance to immerse yourself in 200 years of Ibiza history. The former finca would have a few stories to tell if the walls could talk! The garden area makes for the perfect dining spot and there are plenty of choices on the menu. Ibiza is blessed with some of the finest produce and the farmhouse concept has proved hugely popular already. No matter what your preference, there is something for everyone on this menu. We dropped in on Sunday for our first experience and loved every second. There’s a real family feel to Can Mimosa, due mainly to Pedro, Holly and Tim, who are charming hosts and the smell of the food cooking on the grill is fantastic and adds to the atmosphere.

Tim Payne is a chef we know well, having followed him wherever he has landed in Ibiza so we were anticipating a proper feast and we were not disappointed. From the barbecued asparagus with salsa Romesco, baby eaves and Ibiza flowers, which were crunchy and flavoursome, hot off the grill to a delicious barbecued sea bass with tomato and cumin sauce and saffron potatoes. The crispy skin peeled away and the succulent white meat fell off the bones. We couldn’t help ourselves from trying the twice cooked local chicken with sage and garlic, baby leeks and roasting juices and the Galician fillet steak, watercress and tomato. Everything was cooked to perfection, with a combination of flavours that complemented each other. Wherever you look on this menu there is something to catch the imagination; from starts such as Illot goats cheese, beetroot & watercress salad, Ibiza honey, sherry & pepper dressing, clams in white wine with garden herbs or Escabeche of mackerel, saffron vegetables, croutons & tapenade to name just a few, to the mains that include braised red wine rice, sautéed summer vegetables, seasonal mushrooms with garden herbs, barbecued seasonal vegetables, sweet chimichurri and dry aged Galician beef cutlet for two, bone marrow, watercress, tomato and mushrooms.

Sunday in Santa Gertrudis is normally a vibrant affair, with locals and tourists from all over the island heading to the village to spend the day/ night. Can Mimosa offers a chilled, laid back setting for a fantastic feed and with Paul Power of Hot Ice Collective Ibiza delivering an acoustic soundtrack, it really doesn’t get much better. If you’ve had a big one the night before, start your experience with a ‘Devilishly Good Bloody Mary’. The restaurant opens from 19.00 Tuesday to Friday and from 13.00 on Saturday and Sunday. The Tapas bar opens from 11am – 1am Tuesday to Saturday and 11.00 – 19.00 on Sunday. The bonus for us is that we can walk to Can Mimosa in minutes, we’ve found a brand new Sunday spot and strongly recommend you drop in, if you haven’t already have the pleasure.
