Martin Solveig Rings In A New Era For Pure Pacha Posted on June 3, 2019 Words: Olivia Ebeling Images: Tamara Sini share this tweet this In a season that has seen more jaw-dropping changes to the island’s clubbing landscape than ever before, the news that French DJ Bob Sinclar was handing over the Pure Pacha baton he has held for years to fellow countryman Martin Solveig was certainly one that sparked intrigue. One of the iconic venue’s most prolific parties, Sinclar’s vision of ‘Paris By Night’ has dominated Pure Pacha since we can remember, while Solveig, of course, had his own successful residency My House at the home of the twin cherries. Alas, in 2019, everything is different, and last Saturday night marked the season opening for Pure Pacha 2.0. As two of France’s most renowned DJs and producers, you’d be forgiven to think that Solveig and Sinclar are firm rivals rather than friends – and it’s certainly a cliché the two pals have played with, most famously in Solveig’s video for hit single “Hello” where he competed and lost against Sinclar in a tennis match – but in reality, the two amigos have collaborated more than once. So, ‘what would Solveig do?’ with this iconic concept that was preciously owned by his peer was the question on our minds as we entered the hallowed halls of Pacha. When Solveig announced the big news on his Facebook page back in May, he teased that this dream residency would bring to life his vision of a Saturday night in Ibiza, something that goes far beyond his own Martin Solveig repertoire. Well, what can we tell you, his vision rocks! Far from relying on his own chart-topping hits and dishing out the same iconic house music anthems that have filled floors on the White Isle and beyond for decades, the French music selector brought a fresh new sound to the inaugural night of Pure Pacha 2019. For the occasion, he had invited Sebastian Gamboa Tiga and Skream to join him in the main room, while tucked away somewhere in the sprawling maze that is Pacha Ibiza The Original Funky Room was revived for those who went exploring. When we arrived, Tiga already had the crowd firmly in the palm of his hand, his audience transfixed by his energetic, vocal-laden house sound. Described by Solveig as ‘one of my favourite DJs in the world’, the Canadian producer took no prisoners as he unleashed the pounding bassline of “Hal”, his collaboration with Koelsch, onto the room as he thundered down the home straight of his set. The complete opposite of his predecessor’s grand entrance with the famous gaggle of Parisian showgirls, Solveig entered the booth just before 3am without any frills or fanfare. In fact, from our vantage point we only noticed he had arrived because clubbers began to push to the front and Pure Pacha’s fierce dancer began to flank the booth, ready to bust their best moves. Solveig began his set in almost complete darkness with a steadily building bassline that slowly unveiled itself to be Fisher’s stomper Losing It, gathering in pace and intensity before erupting with a perfectly timed explosion of gold confetti. Solveig was visibly enjoying himself as he briefly teased us with Barbara Tucker’s iconic “Beautiful People” sample which is famously featured on Hardrive’s “Deep Inside” before launching into the Vladimir Cauchemar remix of Kanye West & Lil Pump’s I Love It, which had almost the entire dancefloor enthusiastically singing along. Totally focussed and energetically rocking along to the beats, Solveig kept us dancing with an intriguing mix of fresher than fresh material including Rakurs & DJ Igor Dunaev’s Remix of Billie Eilish track Bad Guy, chart stormers like Electricity by Silk City & Dua Lipa Feat. Diplo & Mark Ronson, and, of course, his own hits such as Do It Right. And ‘do it right’, he did! Chapeau, Monsieur Solveig.
