Standing outside, our excitement could not be contained as we waited for the grand opening of Gatecrasher. Formerly Eden, the club had undergone a multi-million euro makeover last season including the installation of the first VOID Gold Incubus Soundsystem, making it a serious contender alongside the other super-clubs on the island. Clearly we weren’t the only people who were excited to see what Gatecrasher had in store as it got its Ibiza operation underway, with a huge queue as far as the eye could see in either direction at both entrances, it already looked set to be a great night. The doors finally swung open announcing the beginning of the official opening party of Gatecrasher Ibiza 2014 and in true clubbing survival style we manage to quickly run in before being trampled on by the stampede of people all eagerly wanting to experience the latest addition to the clubbing landscape in San Antonio.

Once inside we have to stop for a minute as we can’t believe the amazing transformation this club has undergone. The Gatecrasher Ibiza crew has outdone itself with new lights, LED screens, a monster sound system, a massive disco ball and much more. Two of the Gatecrasher Ibiza dancers walk by us and as we watch them strut their stuff we notice a White Water stand in the middle of the club. Offering the promise of re-energizing, we grab a bottle before making our way towards the DJ booth, rehydrated and ready to bust a move. The new sound system is so powerful that regardless of how far away from the DJ booth you can still feel every thumping beat the DJ has to offer throughout the entire club, immersing everyone in its sound. Sipping our drinks, the Mambo Brothers, having grown up listening to some of the biggest DJs on the planet and the duo is well versed in what it takes to build the floor, dropping some chunky, bass heavy beats that get the party started perfectly. We love to explore new clubbing playgrounds so decide to head to the upstairs bar to see what else Gatecrasher Ibiza has to offer. Upstairs allows a unique viewpoint of the club and DJ booth and with a perfect view, we settle in to watch the last of the Mambo Brothers set. A huge blast from the ice cannon brings it to an end as Shift K3y takes over on the decks. Shift K3y is like no other DJ we have seen before and as he explodes into the DJ booth with ‘When a Fire Starts to Burn’ it is clear we are in for something special.

With a strong garage sound to his set we love what Shift K3y has to offer as does the crowd as we can’t stop dancing to his music. Offering something for everyone, going from garage to electro house we actually have to do a double take as we see the man himself begin to sing the vocals to his own song. Is there an end to this man’s talents? His set has so much energy and fun we soon find ourselves singing along to his huge hit ‘Touch’ and are thankful the sound system is so loud that it drowns out any chance of anyone hearing our screechy vocals. His set comes to an end too soon and as he puts the microphone down we would be lying if we didn’t say we were a little disappointed, officially feeling like Shift K3y groupies hoping to get a photo with him later…

The man given the unenviable task of following is Mistajam, who is clearly up for the task. Just as his set begins, an acrobat is suspended in the air above the crowd, inside what looks like a picture frame, adding a dramatic, theatrical twist to the party. An accomplished radio presenter for years, Mistajam uses this to his advantage as he plays everything from house favourites Julio Bashmore to MK, before going on to address this huge crowd directly. The energy doesn’t stop any time soon and although we have been on our dancing feet for several hours now, they still feel as fresh as when they first touched the floor. Waving our arms in the air we think we have found our new guilty pleasure as Mistajam throws in some old club favourites. Going from old school house to heavy rave we suddenly find ourselves in the middle of Ibiza legend and former Eden resident Alex Ellenger’s set. The change in pace is perfectly timed and elevates the party further; the driving beats taking the party to another level. The main room floor has been packed since the off and the balcony offers an elevated vantage point for those keen to see rather than dance, making this a venue that offers options depending on how you prefer to party. With a strong weekly schedule already released and a few more high profile names to be announced, Ibiza 2014 promises to be an exciting one in San Antonio.
