DJ Awards 2019 Nominee Miane: I’m Not Afraid To Sound Different

Words: Olivia Ebeling

Dubbed the ‘Oscars of the Electronic Music World’, the DJ Awards have been celebrating the trailblazers in our industry for over two decades. While the organisation’s panel of experts has always had up and coming talent on its collective radar alongside the international superstars of the genre, this year especially they are making a concerted effort to champion new names!

Formerly known as Taty Munoz, DJ and Producer Miane is nominated in the Newcomer 2019 category. Described as a dedicated artist with a DIY attitude and eclectic underground sound, she loves to play with house subgenres and influences that range from soul and ‘90s R&B to oldschool house and exotic vocals. It’s no surprise that her unique sound has already caught the attention of Matthias Tanzmann, Hot Since ’82 and Toolroom Records’ Mark Knight (check out her recent set on the DJ Awards radio show here). We quizzed the bright turntable talent on her inspiration and what it takes to make it as a female DJ and producer…

Congratulations on being nominated in the Newcomer 2019 category. What does this awards nod mean to you?
Honestly, it’s one the prizes that I have on my list of goals. You cannot imagine how excited I am because of this! I want to say a big thank you to the DJ Awards for including me!

When did you first become interested in producing and DJ-ing, and what was the reason?
Since I was very young, music gave me so many feelings that I couldn’t find anywhere else. Little by little I realised that it was my dream and I jumped at it!

What influences your own unique sound? Where do you find inspiration?
I consider my sound quite unusual compared to what I hear elsewhere. At first, I was afraid not to sound like the others, but now I think maybe that’s what helped me to stand out.

You have got some exciting projects with the likes of Hot Since 82 and Matthias Tanzmann in the pipeline. How does that feel? Have they mentored you in any way?
Both Daley and Matthias have supported me a lot. For me this is a dream come true that artists of that level do that for me. I´m still excited for that!

A big topic at IMS this year was gender equality and the visibility of female DJs. What has your experience of rising through the ranks as a woman been like?
It’s true that gradually, the industry is getting better… but there´s still a long way to go. This year the issue of equality has been a focus, and I hope this continues very strongly.

What would need to happen to balance the number of male and female DJs and producers? Do you feel the tide is shifting?
Amongst other things, female artists should be introduced as artists, not like a product. But, I also feel like there are a lot of female artists that like that role – that’s why we are always in loop mode.

Are there any female producers and DJs that inspire you and who you would love to work with?
For sure Nicole Moudaber, I love her!

Last, but not least, what does a perfect day on the White Isle look like to you?
A perfect day for me is to be on a secret beach with a refreshing drink!

Voting for the 2019 edition of The DJ Awards has been extended until July 28th. Register and cast your vote here! For more on Miane, check out her music on Beatport.
