Last Friday we walked through the narrow cobbled streets of Ibiza Town and headed up into the stunning setting of Dalt Villa for the 10th edition of the international music summit grand finale. Previous years have seen dance music royalty such as Fatboy Slim, Solomun, Damian Lazarus, Jamie Jones, Sven Vath and Dubfire all grace the stage to end the conference. So as you can imagine the line up to celebrate their ten-year anniversary was going to be just that extra bit special with all some truly specular back-to-back sessions lined up for the night.

As we walked into the main arena we weren’t only blown away by the breathtaking view overlooking Ibiza Town marina but also the effort that has been put into production. The sound system was loud, but crystal clear, which can be rare on a festival style stage and although the sun was still shining down on us, it was guaranteed that the lighting and visuals were going to look really special once the sun set and darkness descended.

We arrived early to make sure we caught the Burn residents Mano Gonzalez and Lollino warm up the crowd with tech-house and feel good floorfillers that seemed to fit in perfectly under the blue sky and provided the perfect warm up for the next back to back session. The Canadian born, UK based Radio 1 techno specialist B. Traits stepped up to the turntables alongside dance music veteran and ‘Front Room Recordings’ boss Jesse Rose for the second set of the evening. Considering both artists usually play what would be considered early hours techno, it was feel good house and piano heavy techno on the cards today, but of course with more harder tracks like Redshape’s gritty slap-bass journey ‘London’ thrown in for good measure.

As the sun started to set in the sky, ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez AKA Masters of Work, or on this occasion ‘Kenlou’ stepped up alongside their (slightly younger) fellow New York neighbours ‘The Martinez Brothers’. We couldn’t help but grin uncontrollably as Louie Vega dropped classic house whilst Chris and Steve Jr. Martinez jumped around like no one was watching, sometimes having to be reminded that they are also supposed to be spinning tracks. Once in control though the brothers reminded everyone why they are still two of the best DJs in the world, providing relentless energy throughout.

Kenlou stayed put as they had another guest joining them, this time an artist who’s style we thought might not blend naturally with the Masters at Work, how wrong we were. Innervisions head-honcho Dixon connected perfectly with the legendary NYC duo, as electro-tipped techno flawlessly mixed with a more modern and slightly harder selection from Kenny Dope and sent the crowd into a frenzy. Voted the number one DJ in the world by Resident Advisor, it didn’t take Dixon much to remind us why he has held this title for the last four years.

Nighttime was upon us now and the stage looked incredible, with visuals on the screen and lights flashing in all directions. Perfect for the world-renowned Pete Tong and Nicole Moudaber, who played an incredible back to back, bouncing off each other and clearly trying to out do one another with their tune selection, which in turn provided one of the stand out moments of the night with Pete Tong dropping Window Licker by Aphex Twin towards the end of the set. Big bouncy tech house reigned supreme for the second last hour of the night as the Visionquest boss Seth Troxler joined the French based techno artist Miss Kitten. A very rare partnership that we can’t wait to see again as Dalt Villa was literally vibrating underneath our feet with the power of the soundsystem.

Last but not least, the most anticipated back-to-back session of the whole night. Afterlife duo and one of the biggest electronic partnerships in the world ‘Tale Of Us’ joined the legendary Maceo Plex for an hour of pure melodic techno. Ending on an emotional tribute to the late great dance music producer Robert Miles – all hands were in the air when for the UK number one trance-classic ‘Children’ dropped and the artists image was projected on to the walls of the century old fortress. An emotional but fitting end to an incredible IMS.
