Over the course of the summer we have driven past Lamuella many a time, intrigued by the name we recognised from local off-season gatherings and promising ourselves to check it out as soon as our calendar would calm down. And with the busy high season behind us, last weekend we finally got the chance to pay a visit to the countryside venue for a get-together with the Essential Ibiza family.

Located on the road that runs between San Lorenzo and San Juan in the island’s North, the modest whitewashed front you glimpse when you whizz past in the car belies the vast and magical universe that unfolds as soon as you step inside the walls that shroud the venue from roadside noise and prying eyes. Describing itself as a ‘collective’ of chefs, foodies, designers, artists, musicians, philosophers and artisans, the outdoor area of the complex offers several spaces dedicated to different cultural, sartorial and culinary delights.

To the left, the first thing we spotted was the spacious and imaginative kid’s area, which lured the younger guests at our table with a huge and cosy tepee to hide in, as well as a slide and an almost life-sized play house that caused much excitement. To the right lay temptation for the grown-ups in the shape of a stylish boutique filled with the most beautifully curated pieces from far-flung locations including intricate jewellery, quality leather accessories and stunning dresses, tops, trousers and jackets. Meanwhile, a stunning selection of crystals and soft furnishings had our inner interior designer go wild, and we had to make sure we were holding on to our credit cards tightly.

Lamuella is named after a utopian planet in Douglas Adam’s literary classic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and we certainly felt transported into another world as we ventured in further and explored our surroundings. The expansive outdoor dining area is covered with what we identified as cream-coloured parachutes to create a tent-like ceiling, and surrounded by lush foliage to romantic yet hip effect. A cool 360 degree bar and open glass-fronted kitchen allow guests to see Lamuella’s culinary creations be prepared right in front of their eyes, while a DJ spins the perfect soundtrack for the occasion, an eclectic mix of chilled out electronica and jazz with world music influences. Meanwhile, a small gallery invites collector’s to add some eye-catching artwork to their portfolio.

We began our night with a selection of cocktails, choosing a refreshing and aromatic Cucumber And Basil Collins, the zingy and citrusy Ginger Man and the potent Pirata Toxico, an exotic concoction made with smoky mezcal, vanilla, pineapple and lime juice that came adorned with a slice of the tropical fruit covered in caramelised sugar and a hint of cinnamon.

Our friendly and knowledgeable waitress Gabby explained the menu to us, which has sections dedicated to both cold and hot starters, light main courses as well as more indulgent seconds and, of course, desserts. Lamuella’s menu focuses on international favourites with an Asian twist, created with an emphasis on home grown organic produce and a healthy balanced lifestyle. The kitchen team is dedicated to creating a fine dine experience within the relaxed boho chic surroundings, with each plate presented like a piece of art.

A first impressive example of this was the selection of homemade focaccia and grissini breadsticks, which were presented in a Moroccan tea pot and with a trio of colourful dips. You know you have hit the jackpot with a restaurant when you can get excited about this fairly common appetiser, and we were blown away not only by the presentation of the warm, squishy carb treats – especially the grissini, the soft doughy centre of was filled with herbs and coated in a thin, almost tempura like shell – but also the aromatic smoked eggplant, arugula aioli and perfume of tomato condiments.

For starters, we ordered wide across the range, tucking into a light and fruity Summer Burratina, a creamy ball of cheese served with raspberries, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, watercress and pecan nuts in a dressing made with cherry vinegar and miso powder. The Vietnamese style Langoustine Pancakes were bursting with flavour and as tasty as the ‘real deal’ we were assured by our Asian travel expert, holding a combination of aromatic shiitake, crushed nuts and fresh herbs in their crispy rice-coconut pancake shells. The BBQ Crispy Duck Steamed Buns disappeared in seconds, with the delightfully squidgy and soft texture of the homemade mini loafs providing a contrast of textures to the crunch of the duck skin and the tender shredded meat. Last, but by no means least, the special starter of Triple-Cooked Eggplant Miso with a side of fennel and kumquat salad was an explosion of intense aromas and topped with fresh red prawns in a spicy sauce, a total feast for the adventurous palette.

After such an impressive first course, we couldn’t wait for our mains, and, once again, our mounting expectations were not disappointed. The Crispy Lubina, which came served on a pumpkin and lemon grass puree with wild rice, caramel chilli, almonds and a wakame zucchini salad was declared to be ‘as good as it gets’ thanks to the softness of the fresh fish and the contrast of its crispy skin, while the Wagyu Burger wowed with its luxurious beef flavour, the perfect texture of the brioche bun and exotic toppings of Japanese mustard and pickled ginger. The accompanying side dish of hand-cut truffled root chips was good enough to warrant its promotion to a main course!A recommendation from Gabby, we washed it down with the organic Antidoto Tempranillo from the Ribera de Duero area.

We also tried the Thai Fish & Chips, which offered a healthier take on the British classic by combining buttered wild fish with fried root vegetables and a curry and spicy papaya salad. Another standout was the Massaman Beef Curry, a selection of tender and perfectly grilled meat that was pink in the middle and delightfully soft, served on a bed of soba noodles and accompanied by bok choy, crispy battered eggplant tempura and a sprinkle of fresh herbs and dried coconut powder. With a spicy kick from the creamy red coconut sauce and the crunch of the greens combined with the softness of the meat, it was every Asian food connoisseurs’s dream on a plate.

Having left some room for sweets – of course, this wasn’t our first time at the rodeo and now that it’s October we are hungry – we decided to share one of the Chef’s Dessert platters, which basically offers a combination of everything on the postre menu. A visual feast, the artfully arranged patisserie selection included a healthy chia seed pudding, a dense and rich chocolate brownie topped with a deliciously bitter matcha cream, a moreish and fluffy sesame crumble, pieces of fresh fruit and a silky merengue cream to dip them in, as well as a luxurious and intense chocolate soil. Our tummies filled with delicious food and our hearts happy, we reluctantly called it a night and left Lamuella with firm plans to return.
