Space Ibiza Sydney 2013

The start of the year is without a doubt one of the best times for a party, the expectation that follows a change of year, the hope of the months to come and the relief of saying goodbye to one that might not have been too good to us amps up the usual atmosphere and results in an outpouring of emotion. Add to that a collection of amazing DJs, a couple of huge club brands, a fantastic venue and some scorching weather and what do you think is going to happen? Space Ibiza party on New Years Day in Sydney has become a major part of the global celebration at the start of the year and the 2013 episode was as good as it has ever been.

Having sampled the Space Terrace on numerous occasions since it made a monumental impact back in 1996, Paul Strange knows exactly what the legendary Ibiza venue has to offer the rest of the world. What he witnessed all those years ago has turned him into one of the finest promoters around and in Sydney; he seems to have found his home. His appreciation for club music and for the people who deliver it, coupled with the trust his loyal crowd place in him and the events that he delivers is a match made in heaven. Since bringing Space to Sydney to celebrate the turn of the year, the event has gone from strength to strength and on the evidence of 2013, it’s only going one way!

Greenwood in North Sydney provided the perfect spot to celebrate the start of 2013 with a few thousand friends and some of the finest talent on the electronic scene. The weather never lets you down and delivered a stunning day, shorts, t-shirts and shades were the order of the day as the New Year got off to a flyer. There really is nothing to beat a day under a hot sun with the best electronic music throbbing out of a monster sound system and that’s exactly what we got. The crowd was in great spirits, a mixture of the pure party spirit and the seasonal assist making it one of the most enthusiastic crowds that we have ever been a part of.

With high-rise offices as a backdrop, Greenwood offered a unique party place and helped in setting the whole thing off, there’s something very cool about partying in the middle of a vibrant city, almost a feeling of doing things we shouldn’t be doing. The stage was the focal point of the party as talented artist followed talented artist in delivering amazing performances. This is one of Paul Strange’s strength, his understanding of the nuances that are involved in a large line up. He always manages to pull together the right combination of performers and Space `Sydney 2013 was not different. Kerri Chandler and Carl Craig occupied the headline spots and rightly so, if there are two bigger contributors to the growth of the scene internationally through their hard work and ability, we have yet to meet them. They provide quality born out of thousands of parties around the world, where they learn a little bit every time and bring an ability to rock a dancefloor, no matter where it is. That’s exactly what happened on January 1 2013 at Greenwood, Sydney.

The rest of the line up is where the talent of the promoter comes to the fore, without taking anything away from anyone, it’s not the most difficult decision to decide on a headline DJ or two, putting together the rest of the line up to compliment them is where the real talent lies and we were blessed on New Year’s day. The likes of Mathew Jonson, Pig & Dan, Franck Roger, Remo, Garry Todd and Lee M Kelsall were among the numerous protagonists who combined to ensure that 2013 got off to the very best start possible. Everyone was inspired, yes, it’s hard not to be inspired when faced with the partisan crowd on a stunning sunny day in the heart of a city like Sydney, but what we got from them was truly special. Start as you mean to go on they say, well, if this is anything to go by, 2013 could be a magical year!
