Let’s Go OUTSIDE

At almost full moon in Ibiza, strange and mysterious things come to pass. You can smell craziness in the air (even more than usual), and a collective sense of wanting to let loose and go wild – essentially just like most other days on the island but cranked up a notch. As the mystical night approaches, tension slowly builds to a dizzying crescendo before crashing down in a split second in a haze of unrelenting depravity. Add to that all frenzied mixture a hot, humid evening and the very first day of July (summer is officially in full flow) and you’ve got a recipe for trouble on your hands. So it was with a combination of trepidation and excitement that we headed to BEACHOUSE last night for the opening party of Andrea Oliva’s OUTSIDE, yet another gem in this venue’s glistening crown.

BEACHOUSE is the perfect place for nights like I just described – where better to unleash your inner werewolf than on a beach, under a twilight sky with the breeze blowing on your back. This year the Playa d’en Bossa venue has pulled out all the stops with a schedule of blistering line-ups, with Wednesdays now belonging to island-favourite Andrea Oliva and his gang. Hot off the back of 4313, Oliva’s debut album release, he’s set to take the helm of this weekly residency with a host of yet to be announced special guests. So not only can you expect a dose of Oliva mastery, you’ll also have some surprises thrown in for good measure too.

So as we arrived at BEACHOUSE last night, with that infamous moon glinting mischievously on the ocean, the steady pump of bass drew you further and further in. Oliva is behind the decks, revelling in the hyped up fervour of the crowd, and behind him making light work of shots is Mobilee Records head honcho Anja Schneider, this week’s special guest. She dips in and out throughout the course of the night, effortlessly bringing revellers to their knees with a dose of Berlin-inspired nonchalance. In the meantime we’re at the mercy of Oliva, who keeps things relatively subdued before taking it up a level come 11pm. He ploughs on with favourites like OXIA’s ‘Domino’ and pays tribute to Âme, who’s playing at the Paradise opening at DC-10 down the road, with his version of ‘Envision’. The final hour is an unyielding tirade of tunes that keeps people dancing until the very last seconds.

And right there with them until the end is Richie Hawtin, who’s taken prime position in front of the DJ booth for the entirety of the night. Hands in the air, eyes closed and swaying from side to side, he’s playing the model fan. And so the first instalment of OUTSIDE comes to a close, having successfully set the bar for the weeks to come. What can we expect over the course of summer? More craziness, we’d predict, whether it’s full moon or not.
