Ibiza Getting Ready For Grand Prix

Posted on August 22, 2014

It is just over 12 days to the launch of the Ibiza Grand Prix and momentum is building to the inaugural event in the waters of Playa d’en Bossa. September 5, 6 and 7 will see the island host an official Grand Prix of the Motorboat World Championship, the first time it will have been held in Spain. The three days of racing brings an exciting new event to the island, a host of new visitors and some of the most breathtaking white knuckle sport, with the Class-1 powerboats weighing 5 tons, measuring 13 metres in length and reaching speeds of over 250 kph! The Aquabikes also bring an exciting dimension to the three-day event with a freestyle session showcasing just what these machines can do.

The Ibiza Grand Prix lands in Spain for the first time ever and choosing Ibiza as its destination is yet another example of the continued evolution of the popular tourist destination. Of course, it wouldn’t be Ibiza if there wasn’t a substantial event schedule surrounding the three days of competition and with Ushuaia and Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza leading the way, there are a host of venues that will be presenting some special events, including official paddock venues Coco Beach, Sir Rocco, Harbour Club, Beachouse, Nassau Beach, KM5, Lips and Sands. All of the venues named, and adding in the Marina, offer stunning options both day and night, and with a selection of parties and dinners tied into the competition on top of the existing five star service that they offer, it is shaping up to be another high point in a summer full of them.

Grandstands will be erected along the Bossa beach, giving an uninterrupted elevated view of the action, from the powerboats ploughing through the sea, around the course to the aquabikes with their talented riders somersaulting over the waves and putting the machines through their paces. The promo video that was released recently whet the appetite even further as it gives an indication of what we can expect come race day on Sept 5,6 and 7. The buzz on the island is growing as the campaign to raise awareness of the event kicks into top gear, and with promo banners hanging from every lamp post in the Marina, it’s clear that the adrenalin fuelled event is only round the corner. Daniel Gómez Korf, CEO and founder of the Ibiza World Championship (IWC) has declared: “It is a unique opportunity that will put Ibiza in the global scene of the extreme aquatic sports, where the fast boats reach unbelievable speeds. This is for sure an unprecedented event in Spain that will help to promote the tourism on the island. It is estimated that around 400,000 visitors will be present in Ibiza to enjoy those days full of adrenaline.”
