Guru Josh Art Posted on March 6, 2014 share this tweet this Guru Josh is a name that will forever be linked inextricably with the dance music scene, from the early rave anthem that helped inspire a generation to the multi-remixed track that has dominated commercial charts and dancefloors seemingly endlessly since its first release. For its creator, it has opened a door to a world and a life that he was born to live. Guru Josh has found Ibiza, his spiritual and creative home, a place where he feel free to express himself and a place that inspires his natural creative urge. Music is still a huge part of his life but more recently he has shown the world another side to himself, through Guru Josh art. More used to be at the centre of a room full of sweating, elated ravers than a gallery of discerning art lovers, Guru Josh has quickly adapted to his new found fame and is enjoying the next chapter of his creative journey. We caught up with him as he returned from another art exhibition, this time in Madrid, to find out a little bit more about Guru Josh, artist… Book Ibiza VIPBook an Ibiza VIP club table with Essential Ibiza and enjoy the ultimate Ibiza clubbing experience. How would you describe your art? Three dimensional, multi translucent, layered crystal flux. Is art something, like music, that you have always had a passion for or is it a recent evolution in your creative output? Exactly the same, it’s all about chemistry, the combination of ingredients in experimentation in the hope you will end up with something nice. Are there any similarities between seeing a piece come to fruition and leaving the studio having finished a new tune? Basically the same, it is not the be all and end all if something is commercially successful, when you have done something magic you know. The best place in the world… How can you not be inspired surrounded by the coolest individualists, all living in acceptance of who you are not what you are, all on an island with a great climate, the best scenery and the tastiest melons! Having produced one of the biggest anthems of the acid house era, were you always fated to settle in Ibiza? Yes… Ibiza calls you and just like a magnet its attraction to the right people is irresistible. You exhibit your art around the world, how does it feel to see a part of you hanging on a wall for people to admire, do you feel creatively exposed? Of course, the best compliment is when someone admires your work whether they buy it or not, obviously the icing on that all-important cake is when they delve into their pockets and hand over some wonga! Do you have a process or are you a wake up in the middle of the night and start painting kind of guy? Too much so, when I start I literally immerse myself in another world and it takes over completely. Every piece I make I cannot understand how I did it and I am the greatest fan of my work. What gives you greater satisfaction; to see a room go crazy as you drop one of your own tunes peak time, or a gallery full of people admiring your work? The music is instantly gratifying and the art world is completely different. To be honest I get bored shitless going to art shows, that’s why, at the last exhibition at Arco 2014, I combined music and art to give me something to look forward too. After I finish my works of art, I basically felt that I have nothing more to prove. Other peoples view might be different but I let my art speak for itself and believe you me, it’s voice is much louder than mine. What’s your idea of the perfect day in Ibiza? Having the freedom to enjoy its magic. share this tweet this
