It wasn’t the cloudless blue sky and blazing sunshine we were hoping for but it was still warm, and when the sun did show its face, it was a welcome teaser of what we can look forward to from the coming months and nothing was going to stop us dropping into Es Cavallet for the opening of El Chiringuito, another one of our favourite island destinations. The drive from the motorway to Es Cavallet is one we enjoy and make often, passing DC10 on our right, like a sleeping tiger, biding its time before all sorts of summer madness ensues. The traditional buildings standing alone in a blanket of fields, past the salt flats and over the small bridge to the car park, where Es Cavallet offers a refreshing beach experience. The deep sand between your toes, the beautiful view and the opportunity to sample one of the world’s finest beach concepts.

We take full advantage of getting into the car park near the venue, unless you are up at the crack of dawn, this is not possible in summer as El Chiringuito is one of the most popular beach destinations for the in-the-know travellers that invade the island. There are some white clouds in the sky but nothing that can wipe the smile off our faces as we wandered up the entrance for the first time, like meeting up with an old friend after a few months apart. The restaurant was already quite busy and there were sun worshippers already spread out lazily on the luxurious day beds, taking advantage of the spells where the sun pops out, slipping into their tee shirts when it disappears. The sea colour blends from dark blue to turquoise with the odd burst of white when the waves break, making for a dramatic backdrop.

There’s nothing to beat a day at the beach when the sun is blazing down, but it’s also cool when a couple of layers are required. The crowd inside the bar area looked like they were straight out of a glossy magazine shoot, with colourful scarves and hats complimenting their spring outfits. The open kitchen is a big favourite of ours, there’s something therapeutic about watching chefs go about their work, the fruits of their labour passing by as they are delivered to hungry diners at tables inside and out. In El Chiringuito there is a real sense of family amongst the staff, many of them have been with the venue for as long as it has been open! Mr. Doris was on deck duty, and delivered the perfect soundtrack of soul, funk and rare groove, creating a classic, laid back vibe. It’s a fantastic time on the island, with so many of the great concepts opening their doors for the first time, offering islanders the chance to enjoy them before the masses arrive. It’s that calm before the storm as everyone takes advantage of the last few weeks of relative tranquility before the island gives itself over to another wave of tourists. For now, El Chiringuito is open, so take advantage, drop in for some lunch, grab something unique from the boutique and enjoy the beautiful beach that is Es Cavallet.
