Ibiza 2017 saw a Dutch invasion of the Hï Ibiza booth every Wednesday as Armin van Buuren and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano took on Theatre and Club residencies respectively. It represented the breadth of world-class talent that has emerged from the electronic dance superpower as trance and big room house offered clubbers a choice of night out. With a string of roadblock parties littered across the summer, there was time for one last hurrah, as the latest Hï Ibiza party closed its doors for the summer.

When it comes to emotive, hair-raising trance, there are few protagonists on the planet with the pedigree of Armin van Buuren. His A State Of Trance radio show has been a global benchmark for the genre for as long as we can remember, he has topped DJ polls frequently and overseen some of the biggest parties around the world. His Wednesday night residency in Hï Ibiza’s Theatre this summer has consistently delivered as he invited a series of peers to join him in the booth. For the finale, responsibility lay with Ørjan Nilson and Ruben De Ronde.

The Club, meanwhile saw Dutch progressive house heads Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano hold court for the final time, inviting Leroy Styles and special guest Fedde Le Grand to help bring the curtain down. The second room has been driven by a different beat for the summer, offering an alternative to trance that ensured two fantastic musical journeys every week. Both rooms complemented each other, the headliners even found the time to collaborate on a track for the summer, to celebrate the union, ‘You Are’ could be heard in each room over the course of the summer. The Club offers a slightly more intimate space, where minimal lighting gives it a darker outlook, and makes for an exciting vibe. It was a spectacular end to a summer that could not have gone any better as each DJ kept the capacity crowd on its toes. We’re pretty sure we also saw Afrojack in the booth with the duo at one point but to be fair we had a few drinks by that point!

The highlight for many, ourselves included, was Armin van Buuren’s final set. This is a performer that is acutely aware of what it takes to control an Ibiza crowd. He has enjoyed years of success doing exactly that in many different Ibiza institutions. His eye for the dramatic and his ear for a tune makes him a lethal performer and, on the last Wednesday night of the summer, he left nothing in his box! A driving beat, throbbing basslines, hypnotic synths and emotive vocals filled the huge room from start to finish. The breakdowns were met with spontaneous roars of approval and a sea of hands-in-the-air. With the production looking like the DJ was caged on stage and lighting shooting thick, beam like shards across the floor and the visuals completely mesmerising all in the room, it’s not hard to understand why the latest venue has been an instant success on the clubbing capital. When the last beat was still ringing in our ears and the LED screen said ‘Thank You Ibiza’, it was time to head out into the street, completely satisfied with our lot.
