2016 was a special year for new San Antonio venue Rio as it introduced itself to the tourist trade during the latter stages of the summer season before offering locals, resident and out-of-season visitors a genuine winter destination. It celebrates its debut year with a fantastic New Year’s Eve menu, to bring it to a fitting conclusion and look forward with understandable optimism at the promise of 2017.

With three floors offering different experiences – the restaurant and terrace on the ground floor, the club on the first floor and the roof top terrace – Rio has become a popular one stop shop for those that expect a little more from their night out. The first floor opens at 20.00 on New Year’s Eve with the ground floor opening at 20.30. For the special end of year celebration, the first floor club will be transformed into a cozy dining space with DJs offering a soundtrack tov your meal before the club opens at 12.30. The rooftop terrace is the obvious choice to relax and sip your chosen tipple and take in the spectacular fireworks show that heralds in the New Year.

The New Year’s Eve dinner starts with a welcome glass of cava as you are shown to your table. The starters will be served on a platter in the middle of the table for sharing and come in three choices, the first options includes Cantabrian anchovies with grated tomato, smoked salmon with asparagus and spicy cream, pastry filled with Galician mussels and gyozas (pasta) filled with steamed vegetables served with soy sauce. Starter two consists of jamon Iberico from Extremadura, the finest cut of Ibirian pork tenderloin and goats cheese with rosemary with the final starter choice including grilled lobster, grilled king prawn, boiled shrimp, fresh oyster, crusty crab and grilled scallop. There is something for every palette.

It’s a varied feast that offers a fitting celebration of the end of the year. The finale is a series of deserts to choose from that includes a duo of mousse of white and milk chocolate and a mixed platter of Spanish desert specialties such as Turrón (Spanish Almond nougat), or Polvorones (Almond cookies). The meal is 85 euros per person and there is also an extensive children’s menu at 30 euros per child.

The welcome, including a glass of cava, kicks off at 20.00, with the meal beginning at 21.30 and running until 23.45, at which time the preparations for the countdown begins with a Spanish tradition of eating the ‘Grapes of Joy’ with a glass of cava, cider and wine. The countdown to the turn of the year sees the arrival of 2017 at midnight and the party in Rio’s custom built club will commence on the first floor, after the tables have been removed. It’s a genuine option for celebrating the change of the year and welcoming 2017 in style.
