At Tuesday night’s Together opening party in Amnesia, clubbers turned out en masse for Ibiza favourites including Sigma and Chase and Status. If last night’s feel-good dance party is anything to go by, summer has well and truly started.

Amnesia is inarguably an Ibizan institution, and over the years it has cultivated an image as one of the more traditional superclubs, booking slots with bombastic, chart-topping DJs and making sure everyone goes to dance, drink, sing and have an uninhibitedly good time. Walking into the main room at the opening party, you were met with a sea of bodies – the gigantic room felt full to bursting, and even relatively early on, everyone was jumping and dancing. When you circumnavigate the edges there’s no escaping the electricity in the room, but battle your way front and centre, directly in front of the DJ booth, and the intensity is palpable. The lights are bright and neon, the bass is vibrating through the floor and the walls, and podium dancers gyrate energetically in black leotards. This is classic Ibiza in it’s full, loud and electric form – this is the original meaning of clubbing.

With chart-topping superacts in the booth at the opening party like Sigma and Chase and Status, the night was always destined to be a feel good, summer-ready dance party. Every song that came on was instantly recognisable from the UK and European charts, and the crowd responded accordingly; singing every word, eagerly anticipating every drop, cheering when the first few bars of a song sparked recognition. The crowd is a young, vibrant one and you get the sense that this is, in a way, a supercharged version of clubs in their hometowns up and down the country – but this time it’s the real deal, where generations before have danced the night away in exactly the same way.

All the DJs in the lineup thrive off the energy, bouncing in the booth and interacting with the crowd. There’s a lot of rapport between the two and it elevates the whole room. Partygoers are standing on podiums, speakers – basically everything they can – and throwing their arms up on command, jumping at every beat and going mad at every drop. There’s a really mellow, feel-good vibe to the night – there’s no real pushing and jostling despite the venue being packed out, everyone is just dancing together. As the night turns into day, the mood shows no sign of abating; the crowd is just as excited and vibrant as they were at 11pm the night before. For a lot of people going wild in the crowd, you can just tell that this is what they came to the island for – if not specifically for this set, on this night, then for what it represents; this vibe, this feeling, this intensity and – aptly – this Togetherness.

The opening party might be over, but the residency has a strong lineup throughout the season for those worrying they might have missed out. In the coming weeks, Rudimental, Pendulum, Mistajam and Duke Dumont (to name but a few) will take over Amnesia every Tuesday until September, guaranteeing that the floor-fillers carry on all summer long.
