Café Mambo Opens Its Doors Posted on May 13, 2017 Words: Olivia Ebeling Images: Tamara Sini share this tweet this With its stunning sunset views and world-class DJ sets, it’s no surprise that year after year, visitors to the White Isle and island residents alike are impatiently awaiting the return of Café Mambo, one of the most famous bars not only in the Balearic paradise that it calls home but also the world. It’s even less surprising then that its official opening on May 12th caused a roadblock on San Antonio’s Sunset Strip, creating the kind of hustle and bustle that just a few years ago wouldn’t have been witnessed outside of the high season months of June or July. But with a killer line-up that featured island-favourites and international master mixers Darius Syrossian and Andy Baxter, as well as Café Mambo’s own talented residents Dee Montero, Danny O and Jason Bye, of course music lovers from all corners of the island had turned out in force to celebrate the arrival of the 2017 season. Despite a somewhat stiff breeze and hazy skies, the atmosphere was already buzzing when we arrived, with revellers enjoying dinner and drinks on Café Mambo’s spacious terrace area, while others toasted the impending sunset from the wooden benches on the rocky coastline below the restaurant. Those who had secured a table in Café Mambo’s sleek VIP area were savouring their meal not only with prime views on the golden sky and glittering water, but also the DJ booth, were Dee Montero was playing a relaxed set of Balearic classics and chill-out tracks as guests awaited the spectacle of the fiery red ball disappearing into the waves. As the moment got closer, the sunset was greeted with a classic operatic anthem that caused goose bumps all round before switching to Robert Miles tune Children, a surprising but touching tribute to the legendary DJ and producer who had sadly passed away only a few days earlier, that brought tears to many an eye. Once the sun’s golden afterglow gave way to twilight, Montero began to ramp up the energy with some upbeat and funky vocal house numbers that had guests both inside the venue and on the promenade dancing away until Darius Syrossian took to the booth. The DJ was greeted with much excitement, with revellers whooping and cheering as he stepped behind the decks. Camera phones were whipped out at lightning speed to capture the music selectors set for those not lucky enough to be there, and he didn’t disappoint, giving the evening a more underground vibe. Deep basslines were throbbing through the air while Syrossian showed off his technical skills by slicing in isolated and distorted sounds that added a tech-edge to his house music offering. By now, the VIP area was up on its feet dancing, the busy inside space of Café Mambo was heaving with people excitedly throwing their hands in the air and those on the strip filling up the walkway and craning their necks to get a closer look at the master mixer. One thing became crystal clear; Ibiza is ready to rock and welcomed back one of their favourite seaside party destinations with much enthusiasm. Bring it on, summer!
