Space The Final Opening

We don’t believe it. We refuse to believe that this opening was the last one ever for Space Ibiza. During its 27 years of existence this club turned into a place of worldwide reference and reverence, and its opening has always been the starting pistol for the whole summer in Ibiza.

Now that many venues begin their season even earlier in May, Space opening didn’t lose its significance at all – it still marks the transition from ‘preparation mode’ to ‘full swing mode’, it’s a major meeting point for all devoted partiers, and one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. And now, on May 29, the last ever opening took place. For those who couldn’t afford coming to Ibiza on that date, Ibiza Global Radio and Ibiza Sonica were broadcasting the music, and Be-At.TV were in charge of the video broadcast, thus spreading the vibes of the Playa d’en Bossa nightlife institution all around the world.

Usually, opening party line-ups are littered with heavyweight DJ names. Space, however, ignored all the rules and instead booked for the extra special occasion mainly those DJs who embody best the spirit of the legendary club and define the sound of the whole island. Igor Marijuan, Camilo Franco, Oscar Colorado, Javi Bora, David Moreno, Mr.Doris and many others were distributed evenly between the five regular rooms plus the Open Air Flight Stage, that is used traditionally only for the openings and closings. Big international artists were selected with the aim of inviting first and foremost those who used to contribute the most to the image and history of Space throughout the years: Sasha, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo, Wally Lopez…

Among the early gigs, the most exciting one was probably that by Reboot in Open Air Flight Arena. He was presenting his new aLIVE concept – a live analogue show, supported by the album of the same name, which is scheduled to see light in July on Get Physical. Standing himself under the scorching sun (though the nights are pretty chilly yet), he did his best to keep a relatively slow pace and immerse people in listening to beautiful tunes rather than make them dance till they were breathless before the big rooms are even open.

Later on, it was Wally Lopez who started to gradually build up the tempo with his trademark springy tech house to usher the crowd into a more energetic mood. Nearly everyone in the crowd were either fanning themselves with a red La Troya fan, or wearing a black round Sundays at Space sticker (some put it straight on the forehead, to keep the vibes rolling). Stiltwalkers were making their way through the crowd, giving away roses, and the sound and light crew, perched under a tent near the bar, were rocking and bobbing behind their laptops so buoyantly, one could easily mistake them for a DJ collective.

In the past few seasons all the big openings and closings in Ibiza used to be strictly techno-oriented. Space decisively ditched this tradition, opting instead for more timeless house rhythms, not confined to any particular era or trend. No matter which dancefloor you chose, music there was cheerful, optimistic and never too darkish – thus celebrating the long history of Space that has always been full of joy and positive vibes. The Terrace sounded a tad harsher and more experimental than La Discoteca, especially when Sasha took to the decks, but all in all the sonic landscape of the night was relatively smooth.

It should also be acknowledged that the Premier Etage was always on top (not only literally, but musically as well) – the last set by Ramon Castells on this floor was especially beautiful, profound and enthralling. Last night, and evening, and afternoon the air at Space was full of love, bliss and gratitude. Tourists from all over the world and numerous Ibicencos, both native and expats, considered it as a must to come here for the historical occasion.
