Not many people have the sway to get the movers and shakers of the electronic music and entertainment industry to jump on a plane to attend a film screening in Ibiza on a Sunday night, but that’s exactly what happened at the premiere of the movie adaptation of British author Collin Butt’s A Bus Could Run You Over, titled White Island, which saw residents and international guest head to the hills just outside of San Antonio for an open-air viewing at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes.

In honour of Ibiza, the dress code was ‘white’ and the crowd made for quite a dazzling display as they piled into the sprawling finca. Teaming up with some of the most iconic and popular brands on the island for both the production and premiere of the film, we were greeted by a bevvy of Ocean Beach beauties who guided us to the red carpet for a picture opportunity. Cinema Paradiso had transformed the bright pink and green tennis court into a outdoor movie theatre complete with a huge screen, comfy bean bags and champagne bar, providing a quirky setting for the highly-anticipated premiere. First, though, it was time to mingle.

Cast members including lead Lyndon Ogbourne, London rapper Elliot Gleaves a.k.a. Example, Gala Gordon and Darren Day, as well as Ibiza stalwarts and backers of the project Tony Truman and Wayne Lineker wandered through the sprawling gardens catching up with friends and posing for pictures with fans. Just after sunset, when darkness had descended onto the venue allowing viewers to see the action on screen in all its glorious colours, we grabbed a bag of tasty buttered and salted popcorn and a bottle of wine and settled into our seats. With spaces filling up quickly, some people had to make do with standing spaces, but the well-catered bar and pacey storyline of White Island kept them in good spirits.

A comic crime thriller, the film tells the story of former DJ and reformed party animal Connor, who has sworn never to return to Ibiza in a bid to avoid temptation and the ghosts of his past. However, after finding himself caught up in a drug scam with his best friend Dexter, who has just set off to spent the season DJing on the island, he has to confront his feelings of guilt and fear to save not only the life of his pal, but also his own. The pull of the White Isle and its ability to throw you a curve ball is well known to Ibiza veterans, so can Connor overcome the challenges that face him and make peace with his past?

With many of Ibiza’s famous faces, iconic venues and stunning locations making an appearance, as well as surprise cameos from popular TV and movie stars like Titanic‘s Billy Zane, White Island makes for compelling viewing with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at. The notion that Ibiza is so much more than a holiday destination, an entity that captures your heart and soul in a way that will never leave you, resonated with many in the audience, and there were several people wiping away tears when the credits started to roll. Island resident and DJ Paul Reynolds said, “I think the movie was absolutely brilliant, it translated from the book really well. I used to work with Collin at Plastik so my wife and I read it a couple of years ago and I thought it was fantastic, really funny.” Singer Peyton, who recorded a song for the movie, added, “I loved it. It was beautifully filmed and the cast is really good. I’m really excited for him.”
