Villa Mercedes Sunday Barbecue

Posted on April 23, 2013

The sun is splitting the sky as we head across the island to San Antonio marina and one of our favourite spots on the island, Villa Mercedes. The converted villa overlooking the marina offers a combination of experiences depending on what time of the day you are there, late afternoon cocktails is a tranquil time, early evening dinner is romantic and later, when it rolls out its extensive entertainment programme it offers a fantastic friendly atmosphere. Today we are headed over to sample the barbecue, a concept that it launched just three weeks before. Manager Javier is at the door with a stunning hostess, greeting everyone as they arrive and offering us a welcome drink of soda, white wine and mint, a nice touch but then, it is always about the extended family here at Villa Mercedes.

We arrived around 01.30 and the restaurant is already busy, families and couples provide a real family vibe and the smell from the barbecue makes us remember we haven’t eaten all morning in preparation! The chicken and lamb looks delicious and as for the black pudding, you have to taste it, nothing I can say will give you any idea of the amazing flavour. With plenty of salad and roasted potatoes too, it checks all the boxes. The quality of the food in Villa Mercedes is always impressive and the barbecue only serves to underline this reputation. They have gone for a real family atmosphere and managed it perfectly, the atmosphere is lovely and it really is an amazing way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The food is not the only thing on the menu this afternoon as Villa Mercedes showcases its ‘Live’ series with another great find, Rysor’S delivers a sublime accompaniment to the food and great vibe. Judge Jules pops in to enjoy some barbecue and there is a real sense of community in the amazing gardens of the villa. It has always had a strong entertainment line up but this season feels like it is really stepping up its game. Paco Fernandez returns every Friday to continue his love affair with the stunning restaurant, offering a taste of Ibiza with a modern twist, he is one of the top performers on the island. Wednesday night sees it launch its homage to Japan with Wasabi Wednesday, including an authentic menu for only 15 euros. Saturday sees Tasting Spain take centre stage, again at only 15 euros, the menu is mouth-watering. Add to that the amazing barbecue every Sunday and the regular opening hours of the already popular restaurant and this summer us shaping up to be one of the busiest yet!

The Villa Mercedes welcome is always a friendly one, the staff is knowledgeable and always willing to advice, whatever your question, they really do make you feel part of the family. It’s what all those months wearing layers throughout the winter are for, to make you appreciate more just what a beautiful island Ibiza is and how lucky we all are to be here. The Sunday barbecue is definitely one of the weekly calendar!
