The days of Asia offering DJs a convenient layover stop on their way to Australia are long gone as more and more artists spend lengthy periods in their calendar year playing at some of the regions amazing parties. One such venue, that offers more than its fair share of underground gatherings and one that has made a significant contribution to putting Kuala Lumpur on the global map is Kyō.

In just two years, since opening inside the Mandarin Oriental hotel, in the shadow of the Petronas Towers, the city’s most iconic building, Kyō has captured the imagination of clubbers within the city and region. Travelling between countries in Asia at the weekend for specific clubs, parties and DJs has become a popular activity in Asia, and Kyō welcomes its fair share of international travellers. The venue’s forward thinking music policy and its dedication to bringing the hottest cutting edge talent to the city has seen performances already from Nick Warren, Moodymanc, Octave One, Dee Montero and Hito, to name just a few.

Founder of Kyō, Godwin, is looking forward to a season of strong bookings and potentially roof threatening parties; “This season we expand our horizons once again with some of the most cutting edge beat-makers in the world. Sets from Nosaj and Hermitude and prove we are dedicated to bringing quality underground acts to the region, while the rest of the season shows we stay true to our hip hop and techno roots.” There are also performances to look forward to from Sasha, who drops in on Thursday October 3 as part of ViVid Presents and there are other dates to look out for, including Jillionaire on August 31, Breakbot on September 12 and Nakadia on September 26. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Kuala Lumpur might not have previously been at the forefront of global travellers plans when it comes to travelling for a part but, with a venue that delivers an electric atmosphere every time, a schedule of international talent guests with talent and a selection of super talented residents from around the region offering the ideal support, it’s starting to grab the attention.
